Sheiko Shark Tales

Principal Update
Dear Sheiko Shark Parents,
Will we ever get two weeks in a row of five full days of school each week? Couple the uncooperative weather with vacations and Professional Development days, and it seems like it has been a long time!!
The additional snow, though, has allowed the children to enjoy our new sleds on our playground hill. Please send them with snow pants and snow boots in order to be able to participate in this fun winter (spring?) activity. And, of course, snow rapidly turns into puddles–and if there is even just one puddle on the playground every boy runs to jump in it (yes–95% of the time, it is the boys!) Please send an extra pair of pants and socks for your child to keep in his/her locker or backpack for those wet mishaps..
Please mark Tuesday, March 14th for our PTO Zoom meeting at 6:30 P.M. Superintendent Dr. Dania Bazzi will be with us to talk about the May 2 Bond Election. This is an important election for our community as, if passed, includes the building of a NEW STATE OF THE ART SHEIKO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL! Zoom in with the link below to find out more about the Bond Election and all the wonderful things going on at Sheiko!!

It was with great sadness that we shared this week the news of the passing of our Sheiko Resource Room Teacher, Racquel Parsons. I have included again here the donation information that teachers Casey Hansen and Jennifer Graham put together. All funds will go to her son Darmel who is a senior at Farmington High School. He will be attending Tennessee State University next year. We hope that this fund will help him. http://ffnd.co/91CQK9
Although Ms. Parsons was with us for just a short time since her start at the end of January, she had already made connections with her students. Read below what a sweet third grade boy shared as he wrote a card to Raquel’s family:
Ms. Parsons was a good person to me. She was my new resource room teacher and I loved her very much. I wish I got to spend more time with her. I will miss how funny and silly she is. She helped me every single day with my work. I am thinking about her family. Her son is a senior in high school and she talks about him a lot. I want to raise money for Ms. Parson’s family. I love you Ms. Parsons and I will miss you very much."
We welcome Blaine McDowell to Sheiko Elementary. Blaine is currently the Dean of Students at West Bloomfield Middle School and has taught at Green/Sheiko School, taught at Abbott Middle School and also helped run the WBHS Summer School program for several years. Ms. McDowell will be helping our students and staff on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
We also welcome Amanda Schaft. Ms. Schaft will be our new Resource Room teacher. She is a graduate of Michigan Technological University and the University of Southern California and most recently taught at Holly Academy in Holly, Michigan. We look forward to her working with our students.

An Award Winning Team
Congratulations to the Sheiko School Support Person of the Year--Kathryn Colpean. Kathryn is the first voice you hear on the phone and the first face you see when you enter the Sheiko School Office. With that neverending smile on her face, she is always ready to help a child, answer a parent's question, or take care of a crisis that occurs every 30 seconds in a school office. Her calm demeanor and amazing organizational skills make her an indispensable person at our school.
Congratulations to the Sheiko School Teacher of the Year--Kristin Strutton. Kristin has taught at Sheiko School for over 25 years. In that time she has guided over 1000 fifth graders on the path to be lifelong learners. She has served in a variety of leadership positions both at the building and district level, always honing her skills to be the best educator possible. But Kristin's real forte--of which she has many--is the relationships she builds with her students. She has high expectations for each and every one of them and diligently works to help them realize the strengths that each of them possess. .
We are indeed fortunate to have these two people as part of our Sheiko Shark family. And we are especially fortunate to know that Kathryn Colpean and Kristin Strutton are but two of the dedicated and hardworking staff at our school. We are proud of all of our Sheiko Shark staff!!!
Students are doing a great job with their Pine Tree reading! Keep it up!
