New Britton Elementary - March 4, 2016
Dear Bulldog Families,
I want to remind you that Dr. Bourff and families from Harrison Parkway will be joining us on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. This is a return trip to NBE, one in which Dr. Bourff will be sharing updated information regarding the referendum. Let’s see if we can join with Harrison Parkway in “packing the house.” We will be meeting in the cafeteria at 7:00 p.m. I hope to see you there. Childcare is available. Please contact Sarah Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like childcare for this meeting. mailto:email@example.com
Safety is of utmost importance at New Britton. In order to increase the safety of our car riders in the morning, we are changing our arrival procedures. Students will now enter the building through door #12 (kindergarten hallway). Please be mindful of the drop-off spots between the two orange cones; do not release your student if your car is not between the two cones. We will be releasing students starting at 8:45 a.m. Please do not release children before this time. Also, if you need to park and come into the building for any reason, you will need to do this after our buses have left. Please do not parallel park in the circle drive during morning drop-off as this will interfere with our new procedure. Thank you for putting student safety first and following these new procedures.
Running and walking are a great way to stay healthy and spend time as a family. I encourage you to join me and other New Britton families in registering for the Geist 5K. Once interested families and staff members are registered, we will designate some meeting spots for race day. Please read the information below for more details. Thank you for considering this heart healthy opportunity!
As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.
Join other Bulldogs for a fit and fun activity!
Each year the Geist Half Marathon has over 1,500 local students participate in their 5K, 10K or Half Marathon. This year on May 21, 2016, New Britton Elementary would like you to show your school pride by lacing up your walking/running shoes and wearing your New Britton school spirit wear!
This local race has donated $366,000 back into our schools over the last 8 years to support physical fitness in our children.
As part of the Geist Half School Program, your race packets will be delivered to Mrs. Jessica Shelton (1st grade) on Tuesday or Wednesday of race week for your convenience. More information to follow! You also receive a school discount! We ask that when you register, select the School Program ticket, then select New Britton– it’s that simple! Make this a family day!
Mark your calendar!
Meet Dan Killeen!
Children’s book author, Dan Killeen, will be visiting New Britton Thursday, March 10th from 1:40-2:40pm. This program is for all grades, k-4. His books are picture books drawn in a cartoon style. He will be sharing his writing process with the students; from idea, to rough draft, to final version. His passion for writing began when he was a child who loved comic books. His ideas are based on silly stories his brother makes up for his children at bedtime. He has also done illustrations for magazines and children’s museums around the United States. Books can be ordered through Friday, March 4th and they will be signed by the author. If you would like your book personalized, and to receive a cartoon postcard that will also be signed, go to the “in-store” events at Barnes & Noble in Carmel. Mr. Killeen will be hosting story times and signings on Friday, 3/11, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, 3/12, at 11 a.m. If you would like to purchase anything, mention New Britton and show the Barnes & Noble Book Fair voucher (#11828670) at the check-out and New Britton will receive a portion of the sale to be used to purchase books for the library. You may also order online at http://www.bn.com/bookfair until March 13 using the voucher.

ATTENTION 3RD and 4th GRADE PARENTS – ISTEP part 1 testing will be the during the time period of February 29 through March 11. ISTEP part 2/CCRA (College &Career Ready Assessment) testing done online during the time period of April 18 through May 6. NBE normally tries to get the testing done in the beginning of the time period and more so in the morning so that make-up’s can be done later in that date timeline. As the time gets closer, teachers will send out detailed dates and information to parents.
The Indiana Department of Education has provided parents with some information concerning the testing at the link below:
Teachers will be providing students the opportunity to go online to learn about the new ISTEP/CCRA assessment. Below is the link for you and your child to look over in your home and will give you a chance to see some types of questions that will be on the assessment.
3rd grade parents only – IREAD3 testing will occur on March 14 through March 18. Attendance during these days is very important; please make every attempt to reschedule dentist/doctor appointments around the test dates.
Here are just a few tips for a good start to every morning and they also make for an even better testing situation:
- Get a good night’s sleep. This is important every night!!!
- A good morning at home makes for a good morning at school.
- Eat a good healthy breakfast.
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Talk to your students about the test in advance not just the week of the test. Remind them to give their best effort today and everyday. This test is important, but too much stress can be a problem also.
- Encourage your student to listen to the teacher for directions.
- Remind your student that they can figure out tough questions that they have the grit and perseverance to figure it out.
- Encourage your student to think positively – they can do this!!!
- Smile J and tell a funny joke – laughing is good for everyone.
Thanks for your help.
Our next PTO meeting is next Tuesday, March 8th at 7pm. Dr. Bourff will be speaking at the beginning of the meeting and then we will be covering our PTO business. We will also be covering openings for committee chairs and board positions that we need to fill for next year. If you are interested, please contact Sarah Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Walk-A-Thon packets went home with students last week . This is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year. We would greatly appreciate your participation. These funds help provide classroom enrichment projects, field trip transportation, and other needs in the school.
Have a great weekend!

Dollars for Seniors Nears
As the winds of March blow in so does the annual Dollars for Seniors (DFS) tradition! Soon, more than 100 local seniors will take to the phones in a telethon style scholarship fundraiser. What makes DFS so special is that it rewards student effort and is not simply based on merit or need. Students from both area high schools work together to learn about local philanthropy, reflect on their time at HSE Schools, set goals, and try to earn money to help both themselves and their classmates pursue their higher education goals! It takes a lot of courage and a little practice for our students to dial the phone, so consider answering the call and pledging to help! Or you can give directly online in honor of the Class of 2016 at http://hsefoundation.org/events/dollars-for-seniors.
