Homework
Student are responsible for earning Academic Vocabulary words directly related to our lessons. The words are divided by nine week grading cycles. At the end of each nine weeks, students will take a comprehensive test (major grade) over the words for that particular grading cycle. Please encourage your child to study these words for at least 5 minutes two times per week. We are going over and studying these words in class.
40 Book Challenge
Your fifth grader has been challenged to read 40 books, from a wide range of genres, by the end of the school year. 40 books may sound like a lot, however, I assure you that I have the utmost confidence that your child will experience success.
Students will be given at least 20 minutes each school day in class to read. They are also expected to read 20 minutes each night at home as part of their evening homework routine. This goal can be reached by reading everyday in class and at home.
The book challenge is adapted from “The Book Whisperer” written Donalyn Miller. She is a 6th grade teacher from Texas. Her book reveals the secrets of turning every student into a vivacious reader!
We are very excited about this program. I look forward to seeing the difference it makes in our students as lifelong readers!
Please let us know if you have any questions about the 40 Book Challenge.
Daily Agendas
Agendas are used as a form of communication between home and school. Please review and sign agenda each night to keep track of homework, important news, events, and to receive notes specific to your child.
Third/Fourth/Fifth Grade Reteach/Retest Procedures
- Students will be retaught concepts they do not master. Reteaching may take place in whole group, small group, or during individual instruction.
Students will be allowed one opportunity to retest on major grades only. Rubrics, projects and final nine weeks/semester assessments will be exempt from reteach/retest procedures.
Reteach/retest will need to be done of the original test being given.
Retest can be an alternative assessment on the same content or the same activity.
Students who earn a grade below a 70% will be required to participate in a reteach session and then retest for that assignment.
Students will receive an average of the two grades. If a student receives a lower grade on the retest, then the original grade will stand in the gradebook.
Classroom Rules and Behavior Expectations

*Respectful
