"Born Worker" by Gary Soto

They say Jose was born to work..

Jose

Jose was a born worker. He believed in working hard to make your earnings. He's dark like his father and sipped coffee like his mother. He believed that if you were lazy and didn't work hard like his cousin Arnie then you didn't deserve to be spoiled.

The Born Worker..

When Jose's cousin, Arnie, approaches him with an opportunity to make a little extra money, Jose reluctantly agrees. Arnie arranges jobs for Jose but one goes horribly wrong. The employer, Mr. Clemens, falls into his drained pool and hits his head hard. While Arnie leaves because he's lazy and cowardly, but Jose stays to help. Alone, he calls 911 but when the police show up to ask what happened. Arnie show's up to take all the credit. Jose learns that there are to types of people, those who are lazy and lie and those who work hard, he is one of the latter.

"He climbed up and saw for himself what his father saw- miles and miles of trees and houses, and a future lost in the layers of yellowish haze."

Review

5 stars!

I like this story because Jose showed real integrity when he just ignored Arnie's rude and hurtful comment and actions instead of picking a fight.
