Down on the Farm
Dear Families,
For the next two weeks we will be talking about the farm. We will be talking about the different animals that live on the farm along with the sounds they make. Some of the things we will be doing at school include:
- Story time with Ms. Katie from Mid-Continent Library
- Sorting pictures ‘farm/not farm’ (sorts and classifies objects into groups)
- Listening-lotto farm game (explore characteristics of living things)
- Sorting and counting farm animal counters (count objects with understanding; match, sort and regroup objects according to one or more characteristics)
- Playing “Duck, Duck, Goose” (work cooperatively with children and adults)
- Conscious Discipline- To identify and name facial cues for the emotional states of calm and diappointed

Spotlight on Learning
Spending Time Outdoors With Your Child
As we see the seasons begin to change, we can take this opportunity to spend time with our children. “Teaching Young Children,” a publication of the National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends that you “enjoy the nature all around you.” Whether they live on farms or in apartments, children need experiences in the natural world. Point out the nature all around you—leaves changing colors and falling from the trees in the fall, bugs living under a rock, birds flying from bush to bush. Go apple picking or visit a park, nature center or farmers’ market. Bring along nature guides, paper, crayons, measuring tools, containers, a magnifying glass, and binoculars so you can help your child become an enthusiastic nature investigator. The fresh air will make your entire family feel great too!

Conscious Discipline
Dear Families,
At Liberty Early Childhood Center, our staff embraces the philosophy of Conscious Discipline by Dr. Becky Bailey. Conscious Discipline is a vehicle to help us promote positive social emotional development. Conscious Discipline is a philosophy that helps teach children missing skills that are necessary to be able to manage upset appropriately and negotiate the social world around them. This would include helping children to understand their emotions so that they are able to consciously make choices regarding how they react in situations. We are using the Feeling Buddies Toolkit to promote learning these skills. You might want to ask your child about the Feeling Buddies that he/she has met. For more information on Conscious Discipline, please refer to the parent section at www.consciousdiscipline.com.
