Week Of January 16th
Highlights from last week....
I am so glad to be back at school with all my friends. They came back rested and eager to learn. We were able to accomplish a lot!
We have also been really working hard on making words using our consonants and vowels. We have been "tapping" out the sounds and then building the words. After we build the word, we sound it out using the letters on the board. The kids are doing wonderful. This skill not only helps us spell and write words, but also helps us break down the sounds while we are reading.
In Reader's Workshop, we continued with the strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?"
In Writer's Workshop, we are still working on Opinion writing. We have been writing about a strong feeling and why we have that strong feeling. The kids are doing great!
In Math, we are working on comparing numbers. The kids are having a great time practicing these skills in their centers.
As part of of our Construction unit, we are learning about building. We have been reading several different versions of the Three Little Pigs and compared the different stories and discussed their similarities and differences.
A peek at our learning this week....
In Reader's Workshop, we will continue with the strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?" Because this is a newly introduced skill, we will be working on this skill for a few weeks before we can move on. If your child masters this skill before we move on, we will work with them independently to challenge them at their level.
We will be launching our WINN groups this week. WINN stands for "What I Need Now". These groups will meet every day during a designated intervention time where all the children in every kindergarten class are grouped based on the skills that they need help with. The groups will combine and be taught the skill. The groups change every 4-6 weeks. This is also the time where children that are above grade level will be enriched.
In Math, we will continue to compare numbers.
We will continue to work and learn about construction. This week we will be reading nonfiction books on construction.

Book orders were placed on Friday. Thank you for your continued support.
Please counties to practice the sight words and read the weekly books that are sent home. The more they read, the better their fluency and vocabulary will be!
Loving our construction vehicles!
Building bridges!
Making structures!
Notes from Mrs. Goldthwaite
I have sent home new sight words for the students to practice. These are the words that we need to know by the end of kindergarten. It would be helpful to go over them for students to start reading them.
We are having fun with our construction centers. I am looking for materials that can be used to have students construct things in our classroom ( shoe boxes, toilet paper rolls, papertowel rolls, empty water bottles, DUCK TAPE, and anything else you can think of). We will be reading about how houses are built. The students are in the process of building a Lego house. We will be talking about construction vehicles. If you have any vehicles that we could use big or small that would be great. Those will be returned to you.
Reminders: please have your child brings extra shoes to wear in the classroom. Wearing big winter boots all day isn't a good thing. Please dress for the weather.
Snacks should be provided from home.
If you want your child to eat breakfast at school please bring them a few minutes earlier.
Thank you to all who have sent in klorox wipes and tissues. We are getting low on dry erase markers. ( black only)
Thank you for all your support! Mrs. G

Notes from Mrs. Melanson
In our construction unit, we will be looking at how houses are built and we will be planning and creating things with materials, such as blocks, legos, lincoln logs, and art supplies. If you would like to help us out, you could send in things like: packing tape, boxes, paper towel an toilet paper rolls, or anything else that you think would be fun to create with.
Many children are wearing their winter boots to school, but are forgetting their shoes/sneakers to change into. You are welcome to send an extra pair pf shoes to keep at school if that is helpful. Just send me a note letting me know that they can stay at school.
Our book order was placed this weekend. Orders will be in within a week.
We are in need of clorox wipes and paper towels.
Our water fountain in the classroom does not work (again!), so it is a good idea to send a bottle of water with your child that they can keep in their cubby and sip on throughout the day as needed,
Thank you for all you do!! As always, if you would like to talk with me you may call or email me at 978-249-2406, or amelanson@arrsd.org. Notes in folders always work too!!
