Falco Newsletter May 16th - 29th
2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Falcon Families,
We are so proud of our students for their hard work and perseverance through state testing this past week. There are a few students who will spend a little bit of time next week finishing their testing due to absences, but the majority of students finished and won’t have to worry about this again for another year!
We have been alerted that Washington County is now in the “medium” level for Covid risk. This means, as a county, we’ve seen case counts and hospitalizations increase. This will also mean you could see more covid notifications from me on Parentsquare. We are required to send a notice if we have a reported positive covid case. We only have to send one per day if we receive a report of a new case. All information about quarantine, testing, and contact tracing can be found on the BSD website on the Covid FAQ page.
Next week is our spring musical, Guys and Dolls Junior. We are excited to see the culmination of all of the hard work from Mr. Foren and his Five Oaks Theater Troupe! Tickets are available in the main office for shows on May 18-20th. Limited tickets will be available at the door. Due to the performances, clubs are canceled next week. This means there will be no after school clubs on Tuesday and Thursday.
We are quickly approaching the end of the school year. We wanted to give you a head’s up on the last day of school activities. The last day of school is Tuesday, June 21st. It is an early release day.
Our 8th grade students have a variety of activities the last day of school including:
BBQ/Lunch activities
Field Day
Yearbook signing
An after school dance
Our 6th and 7th grade students will also have a variety of activities including:
Field day
Yearbook signing
Advisory activities
As the weather gets warmer, (hopefully we get more sunny, warm days) we also wanted to remind everyone that toys including water balloons and other water play activities are not permitted at school. Toys in general should remain at home.
I’m very excited about all the projects and activities coming up for our students as we head into the rest of May and June. There is some great hand on learning, art projects, labs, and other activities as we close out this unusual year! Please look for opportunities to volunteer and get involved not only for the rest of this year but as we move into summer and fall! Please continue to reach out if you have any questions kelly_laverne@beaverton.k12.or.us.

Words From FIve Oaks Library
We are on our last class library visit rotation May 16-27. We are honoring Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Since we won’t be meeting in June, we will highlight Pride Month as well. We have so many fantastic reads here.
Ask your student what their favorite displays have been this year. Have they learned anything new? Were they able to see themselves represented in books they’ve read? Reading is all about mirrors and windows. Where do we see ourselves and where do we peer out to learn about others?
What does college and career readiness look like?
No matter what post secondary path high school graduates choose, students must develop certain essential skills to design their own futures: critical thinking, collaboration, reading, writing, and relationship building. The development of these skills is rooted in belief in self. If students believe they are capable, there is a foundational confidence to learn and a resiliency to overcome setbacks. When educators believe in students, learning and confidence are activated. With teacher support for developing a growth mindset and the academic skills they need for future success, students grow to see their capabilities and find their own way.
What Educators Need To Do Teachers and other adults on a school campus play an important role in student success. AVID supports educators and transforms the learning environment into one where students are challenged, supported, and provided the tools needed to succeed. To do this, educators must: ∙ Insist on Rigor — Educators across the school provide learning experiences where every student is challenged, engaged, and develops a greater ownership in their learning through increasingly complex levels of understanding. ∙ Break Down Barriers — Educators are champions for equity who actively seek out and eliminate educational barriers that would limit or restrict students’ access to meaningful and challenging learning opportunities. ∙ Align the Work — Educators increasingly align their practices and beliefs to the common purpose of preparing all students for college and career readiness as well as students’ long-term success in college, career, and life. ∙ Advocate for Students — Educators consistently advocate for equity and access to challenging coursework for all and help students find their voice and achieve their aspirations through creating strong relationships and providing appropriate guidance.
