What's Up @ West
Sixth grade students in Mrs. Quintangeli's Digital Literacy classes were introduced to WeVideo. WeVideo is an online, cloud-based video editing platform that works in web browsers and on mobile devices. By using multimedia in the classroom, students develop collaboration, critical thinking, creative and problem-solving skills.
West Strong Cross the River Challenge
Incorporating aspects of the West Strong initiative, eighth grade students in Mr. Weygand and Mrs. Burg's physical education classes participated in a river crossing team building challenge. Students were grouped into teams and were tasked with getting the entire group across a "river full of crocodiles" using hula hoops as "lily pads." Each team had to strategize, cooperate, and be welcoming to safely get the entire team across.
Forms of Government Lava Challenge
Students in Ms. Emers seventh grade science classes participated in a Monarch Migration Game this week that simulated monarch migration and the perils that they face along the way.Monarch butterflies are one of the most recognizable species of butterflies in North America. They are widely known for their incredible migratory pattern. They travel between 1,200 and 2,800 miles or more to their overwintering spots in Mexico and Southern California from the northern United States and Canada. Monarch butterflies are threatened by pesticides, climate change, sprawl and illegal logging of the forests where they migrate for the winter. They are also threatened during their migrations by mortality from roadkill and habitat fragmentation. This past July, the monarch butterfly was officially designated as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Scientists estimate that the species' population has dropped between 20% and 90% over the last several decades.

STAR and LinkIt Assessments
The STAR Assessments by Renaissance, STAR Reading and STAR Math, are comprehensive literacy and math universal screeners that are computer adaptive. These assessments will provide teachers with current, reliable and valid data quickly so they can target instruction, monitor progress, provide students with instructional materials, and intervene and enrich where needed. Student reports will be provided to families after each assessment.
The LinkIt! Benchmark assessments help teachers determine student progress on specific topics in Language Arts and Math that are expected learning in a particular grade level/course. The LinkIt! assessments indicate progress on state standards, assisting teachers to target areas of instruction.
LinkIt! Benchmarks will occur a minimum of two times during the school year.
The following provides parents with more information on the STAR Assessments and the LinkIt! Benchmarks and how they are used
Maximizing instructional time for our students is paramount and performance data supports our teaching staff in designing more purposeful and targeted instruction. Our goal is to make sure that every child is on target for success, and we thank you for your continued efforts at home.

PV West Athletic Update
At our recent home football games, administration has observed the need for greater oversight of our elementary and middle school students. 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States.
When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network.
