New Varsity Baseball Coach Announced!
Kevin Stanley replaces Tim Jochner as Head Varsity Baseball Coach
A Conversation with Kevin
Where did you go to high school, college, what were your athletic pursuits? Any significant accolades I can brag about during that time?
I went to Las Lomas High School, and graduated in 2007. I was the Varsity starting catcher all 4 years there. NCS runner up in 2005, and NCS semi-finalist in 2006. Member of the Danville Hoots team which placed third at the Perfect Game Wood Bat National Championship in Georgia, the summer of 2007. I was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 45th round of the 2007 MLB Draft, but decided that going to college was a better option at that time. I was lucky to get a chance to play for an outstanding coaching staff while playing at DVC. That coaching staff included Bob Ralston (Clayton Valley and Cal State East Bay), Mike Neu (current Cal head coach), Andy Tarpley (current College Park head coach), David Jeans (current DLS head coach), Kyle Gross (current College Park pitching coach) and Larry Quirico (CA Community College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame). Unfortunately, at the start of my second year at DVC, I suffered an injury to my throwing shoulder, and would have two surgeries over the next two years in an attempt to play again. I was never able to return to full strength, and finished out my career at UCSB as their bullpen catcher, earning my degree in Political Science.
What brought you to NHS?
After my third year at College Park, I was introduced to Tim Jochner by a mutual friend. After meeting with Tim, I decided that I wanted to come to Northgate and join his coaching staff. As a player at Las Lomas, and as a coach at College Park, I had noticed one thing about Northgate baseball that seemed to be consistent, they always had good players in their program. Naturally, that would entice any coach. But once I got to Northgate, and spent some time around the program, it was easy to see how special the Northgate family is. It's got a true community feeling, which is something that's very special to me. I've got a lot of pride in Walnut Creek baseball, and I love that I get to give back to a community that gave to me.
What prior coaching experience do you have?
After graduating, I came back home to the Bay Area and started coaching at College Park High School with Andy Tarpley and Kyle Gross. We won back to back NCS championships while I was there, winning the Division 2 title in 2014 and the Division 1 title in 2015, as well as being ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 2015. More than 10 players off that 2015 team went on to play college baseball, 8 of them going to the Division 1 level. Out of that group, three of those players are currently in professional baseball, with a few more likely to follow in coming years.
I was the varsity assistant coach at Northgate for the past three seasons, where we won two league championships, and were the Division 2 NCS runner ups in 2016. It is truly an honor to be the next head coach to lead the Bronco's baseball program, and I hope to do so for many years to come.
I have been a coach for the Walnut Creek Bulldawgs for the past 6 years, a local travel ball organization that I played for when I was 13-14 years old. I currently coach in the West Coast Kings program along side Andy Tarpley, David Jeans and Kyle Gross. This past summer I was the head coach of the 18u Lamorinda team which placed 3rd at the 2018 Connie Mack World Series, an elite 18u tournament featuring some of the best teams from all over the United States. I am also an instructor for The Catching Academy, a local organization that specializes in elite level training for catchers of all ages.
What are your goals for the program?
Coach Jochner left the Northgate baseball program in great shape. I've got a tremendous foundation to build off of, great kids in the program, and amazing support from the Northgate community. We've had a lot of success at Northgate over the past 3 years, and were so close to winning the first NCS baseball championship in school history in 2016. Having been a part of two NCS championship teams at College Park, I've seen what it takes to bring home that first place banner: hard work, attention to detail and selflessness. The Bay Area is a very competitive baseball area, and it takes all three of those components to become a champion. My coaching style is a blend of things I've learned from the coaches I played for and coached with, and my own experiences and personality. We've been good, but now it's time to take that next step, and be great.
Can you tell us about your family?
My father, Scott Stanley, has been a MLB scout for over 20 years, is currently scouting for the Miami Marlins, and lives in Peoria, AZ. Before he got into scouting, he coached at Pima Community College(AZ) and at The University of Arizona. My mom and stepfather, Erin and Dan Sicotte, live here in Walnut Creek. I have three brothers, Jeff and Rob Sicotte (22 and 20 years old), and J.T. Stanley(20), who is currently playing baseball at Paradise Valley Community College (AZ).

One of the highlights coach Jerry Kupsch has noticed for the boys is that by the end of the season, all boys had experienced a time improvement, but moreover - every male competitor had under a 7 minute mile (down from a 9 minute average at the beginning of the season). Additionally, 8 boys ended the season with a mile UNDER 5 MINUTES!

Winter Season Outlook- Boys Soccer
1- -How did tryouts go? What was unexpected about them, what was exciting?
Tryouts went as expected with almost 80 student athletes competing for the opportunity to represent the Broncos on three teams, Freshman, JV and Varsity. The player pool for all three levels presented the coaching staff with many challenges on roster selections. But in the end, we selected student athletes that best fit our 3 pillars of the soccer program and will be great teammates. We knew our sophomore class was strong given the great season the JV team had last year, so having so many Sophomore's on the Varsity team wasn't that much of a surprise, but means we're young on varsity experience to go along with returning upperclassmen.
2- What are you looking forward to for your season?
Every season our 3 pillars of community, academics and athletics guide us to success. Our program, individual team and student athlete goals will vary, but beyond to obvious varsity level league, NCS and NorCal trophies, we want to win in the classroom again and go for a 4th consecutive Scholar Team award for outstanding academic team success. During this month we'll be focusing on our culture - being a great teammate - and the effect that has on our success on and off the field. The soccer side of things will take care of themselves, it's the team and program culture that we have to continue to work hard at each new season.
3- What do you do to build team chemistry and collaboration at the beginning of your season?
Similar to what I wrote above, our program culture is cultivated by our strong desire to be great teammates. Our training shirts have number "21" on the back to represent 21 ways to be a great teammate. We work on that by all players reading the book "The Hard Hat" and this season, the varsity team will read "The Power of a Positive Team" by author Jon Gordon. His work has really transformed our program many years ago and we use it has a guide to assist the young student athlete learning about culture, expectations about being a great teammate, and how these life skills can help throughout high school, college and in their professional life. We also will introduce buddy groups that will have an upperclassman at least one Freshman and JV player. These mini teams will work together in building comfort and understanding of being in our program as well as navigating the high school experience. Lastly, we like to eat together - teams that eat together, win together! all three teams will have their share of pasta feeds and team outings at local eateries or at the field post training or games:).
