Westside Middle School's Future Educator Club is for aspiring educators to connect and learn about careers in education. Students will meet on the last Friday of each month during Warrior Time. They will learn and discuss the steps to developing a lesson plan, work on various projects, and learn about course offerings and extra-curricular opportunities within the education pathway that are offered at Westside High School. Students will be completing the Winter MAP test later this month. The tests will be taking place in their language art class and math class. We will be running a 90 minute block schedule these four days. Please make sure your student is in attendance, is bringing their ipad fully charged on these days, as well as getting plenty of sleep and eating breakfast!

Unified Basketball - Our competition season kicks off on January 26th at UBT in Elkhorn!

High School Registration - Registration for high school courses will begin for 8th grade students in the next couple of weeks. All 8th graders will attend an informational session on Tuesday, January 17 during homeroom. During this session, students will learn about modular scheduling, graduation requirements, and activities at Westside High School. The middle school counselors will then go into 8th grade classrooms the week of January 23 to begin the process of registering students for their high school courses. The middle school counselors will then be meeting individually with their assigned students to go over their course requests for high school. This process will go through approximately mid to late February. The high school counselors will come to the middle school on Friday, March 3 to meet with 8th grade students to finalize student course requests.

High School Open House - The high school will have an 8th grade open house on January 23 from 6pm-8pm at Westside High School. There will be an information session in the auditorium at 6pm and one at 7pm. Parents and students will be able to take self guided tours throughout the school.

Homeroom Lessons - Counselors just wrapped up the homeroom lesson on healthy vs unhealthy relationships. Counselors will be back in homerooms in mid to late February to teach a lesson on managing feelings.

When students return for 2nd semester, it will be required that all heavy winter coats be put in the student's locker. Each student has been assigned their own locker, if they need their locker combination again they can get it from their homeroom teacher. Students may continue to wear light jackets, but per our student handbook all heavy winter coats must be put in lockers.

We will start using SchoolStatus as a platform to communicate with families. Please be aware the first time you get a call/text/email, it will say it's from SchoolStatus.

•All can tabs must be in a reclosable bag (gallon or sandwich size) - Extra bags are in Bolamperti's mailbox or request more from her via email.

This week students will have a lesson on MLK. High School Counselors will be speaking with 8th Graders. And students will be working on Valentines for Vets.

This year the WMS Community Club is launching its very own website (wms-cc.org) and we need your help. The mission of the Community Club is to provide support to the Teachers, Staff, and Students of Westside Middle School and our new website will be the primary conduit through which we will convey our programs, events and fundraising efforts. Our new site has many features including an online directory so that you can connect to other WMS students and families and a mobile app so you can connect on-the-go. Here's how you can help:

If you are a family - keep an eye out in your email inbox for an invitation to activate your free membership account. With this free account you will be able to decide what information about you and your family will be published in our online directory. With the tools you are in total control of the data that gets shared. You'll also be able to manage your communication and newsletter settings.

If you are a local business owner - we are looking for any business owner(s) that would be interested in helping to support our new site by becoming a Community Club Sponsor. Your logo would be displayed on our site, your business would be further described on our Sponsors page, and we can include links to direct site visitors to your site. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA) requires each public school district to annually notify parents, staff, and employee groups of its asbestos management plans. A management plan is in place for Westside Middle School and is available for review either at the school building or at the Westside Service Center, 9437 J St. Omaha, NE.

This school building was originally inspected in the1980’s and re-inspected by a certified inspector every three years thereafter. The three-year re-inspection and a ceiling tile inspection was conducted in 2019, and periodic surveillance will be conducted as required. No abatement activities are currently in progress or scheduled for the 2022-2023 school year at this building.

The Designated Person responsible for managing the District’s AHERA compliance and the contact person for questions or to review a management plan is the Director of Facilities, Russ Olsen (402) 390-8331.

W-CLUB: JOIN TODAY
