News from NYSED:
Digital Equity Survey
With the closure of New York State school buildings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent shift to remote learning, many schools and districts have leveraged technology to provide continuity of learning. NYS teachers have made heroic efforts to continue to provide high-quality learning opportunities for our 2.6 million students, but this has proven to be a significant challenge for the NYS students and teachers who do not have, or do not have sufficient, access in their places of residence to computing devices and broadband internet service. To better serve students, families, and educators, it is imperative that NYSED has an accurate picture of the state of digital equity for New York students and teachers. As such, NYSED is requiring all P-12 schools to complete a Digital Equity Survey to provide information on student and teacher access, in their places of residence, to devices and the internet.
News from the NYS Library:
NYS Summer Reading Program
Summertime means a chance to explore new books and e-books, learn new skills, and check out resources, programs and activities through Summer Reading at New York Libraries. It’s the perfect time for students of all ages to see what their local library has to offer! The 2020 summer reading slogan and theme is “Imagine Your Story,” a celebration of fairy tales, folklore, mythology, and sharing your own unique story and voice. This year, libraries across the state will be offering a selection of exciting online and virtual programming – special events, reading challenges, fun activities, and more – throughout the summer months from June - August.
News from NYLA:
NYLA/SSL Board Statement on Anti-Racism
NYLA/SSL stands with the American Library Association in endorsing the Black Caucus of the ALA’s May 28th statement and affirms that, in our school libraries and library programs, Black Lives Matter. NYLA/SSL is an organization of leaders and readers, of people who connect children and adults with literature that will open their eyes, hearts, and minds to the human experience. By bringing the authentic voices of authors and illustrators to our students, we connect them to all people, to all cultures, to all nations, and to all lived experiences now and throughout time and imagination. There is NO ROOM for racism or hate in this work or in the school library programs of New York State.
