Distance Learning Schedules and Expectations in Development
There will be more detailed information shared with you in the coming weeks. Below is a starting point of what families can expect:
1. Minutes of daily instruction: synchronous + asynchronous
Kindergarten: 180 (3 hours)
Grades 1-3: 230 (almost 4 hours)
Grades 4-8: 240 (4 hours)
2. Prioritize LA, Math, Social Studies, Science, ELD, focusing on grade level priority standards
3. Provide flexibility for students to complete asynchronous assignments during the day, so as to not negatively impact home environment or internet access
4. Provide for breaks, exercise, enrichment, fun, self-selected activities
5. Attendance will be taken daily (format TBD)
6. Assessments will determine student learning and progress
7. Provide small group instruction daily.
8. Provide office hours for students and parents
All students will receive devices and school supply materials including notebooks, workbooks, whiteboard, markers, pencils, headphones or earbuds and more.
The school start time is still in the works but will likely start around 8:30am and allow time for parents to check in with the teacher if needed.
I will continue to share and keep you notified of changes and developments.

STARSHIP Corner
Starship PTO:
Happy Summer! We hope everyone is getting some rest these days. An interim leadership team has been working together this summer to organize and plan ways to best support the community this fall. This past Friday, we held a parent meeting to provide an overview of the PTO structure and also held discussion about the upcoming challenges with childcare and distance learning. Many families are interested in forming social pods to support the learning environment. Starship will be sending out a survey this week to get an understanding of parents needs and interests about social pods and child care.
Join Konstella! This summer we moved to a new parent communication platform that we hope will provide greater support and flexibility for our campus needs. You should have received an email invitation inviting you to join. You can also join using this link here https://www.konstella.com/cd/KU7S9V.
Please sign up and join the following groups.
- Program's Grade (Parent Participation or MI)
- All Orion Alternative School (this is for all school chat)
- Program specific committee (Parent Participation or MI)
- Other committees or jobs of interest
Class Coordinators: We are looking for parents to join as class coordinators to support school communication and connection during this next year. We hope to have bilingual teams supporting each grade. Please sign up on Konstella if you are interested.
Every parent, teacher and staff member is a part of Starship and it is essential that Starship represent both programs and the entire community. There are lots of places for parents to get involved and it is exciting to explore the opportunities to come together in these uncertain times to support the campus. A huge thank you to everyone for continuing to stay connected during this time. We will have another parent meeting in mid August.
Questions or ideas: email starship@orionschool.org.
