Quarantine - From Our Nurse Leader
Dear Families,
I hope you are staying well and practicing all the well known safety measures as we deal with increasing cases of COVID-19 in our state and community. As we have learned more about this virus, some of the isolation and quarantine guidance has shifted. Isolation for those diagnosed with COVID-19 continues to be for 10 days as long as there has been significant improvement in symptoms and no fever without the use of fever reducing medications. Quarantine guidelines have had a more dramatic adjustment. We still understand that the incubation period for COVID-19 is 14 days. However the data has shown that most cases have an incubation period of less than 10 days. The CDC has determined that the small risk of transmission beyond 10 days is outweighed by the increase in compliance with quarantine guidelines as well as with cooperation with contact tracing to identify close contacts.
There are now three possible quarantine options. The first two require strict compliance with quarantine as well as active monitoring of symptoms, and the person must remain completely asymptomatic during the entire period. Anyone who develops symptoms or is unable to commit to active monitoring of symptoms must continue to follow the 14 day quarantine option.
Active Monitoring: the individual must actively monitor symptoms and take their temperature once daily. If even mild symptoms develop or the individual has a temperature of 100.0 F, they must immediately self-isolate, contact the public health authority overseeing their quarantine and get tested.
1. 7 days of strict quarantine, release on Day 8 IF:
● A test (either PCR or antigen) taken on Day 5 or later is negative AND
● The individual has not experienced any symptoms up to that point AND
● The individual conducts active monitoring through Day 14
2. 10 days of strict quarantine, release on Day 11 IF:
● The individual has not experienced any symptoms up to that point AND
● The individual conducts active monitoring through Day 14
● No test is necessary under this option
3. 14 days of strict quarantine, release on Day 15 IF:
● The individual has experienced ANY symptoms during the
quarantine period EVEN if they have a negative COVID-19 test;
OR
● The individual indicates they are unwilling or unable to conduct active monitoring
Please call/email Anne Chabot, Nixon School Nurse, (978) 443-1080, ext. 4 to answer any questions you may have. The nursing staff will continue to provide you with updates as they become available.
Stay well,

A Note From Nurse Chabot
Important Reminder about the Flu Vaccine Requirement
The Department of Public Health has added a new influenza vaccine requirement for grade K-12. This requirement was put in place to reduce influenza-related morbidity and to reduce the overall impact of respiratory illness in a population still facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be expected to have received an influenza vaccine by December 31, 2020 unless they have a medical or religious exemption. This is a requirement for all students regardless of whether the district is providing instruction in-person or using a hybrid or remote learning model.
If you have not yet done so, please provide the documentation of immunization, either email or paper copy, to Anne Chabot in the Nixon Health Office at anne_chabot@sudbury.k12.ma.us

state requirements and 105 CMR 220.500A Message from the Literacy Center
Hi Nixon families! If you have a student who works with Mrs. McGavick or Mrs. Zitzmann, could you please look around your house and see if you have any grey copies of books (see picture below for example). Please send these grey books back with your child on their next in person day.
Thanks!
