Chronic Absenteeism- How can it affect my child?
Excused Vs. Unexcused Absences
If you child is going to be absent, please remember to call the school to report the reason for the absence. Also, let us know if there is anything happening that we can help with to help prevent your child from missing school!
Based on New York State Dept. of Education and our Board of Education Policy on attendance, the following procedures are in place here at CS:
- An automated phone call, text, or email is sent around 10:00 am daily to notify parents of unexcused or unreported absences. If you have already reported the absence, you will not receive that call. This notification is a reminder to call the school to report the reason for your child's absence.
- Attendance and Tardy letters get sent home to inform you when your child is absent or tardy. These are sent after every 5 absences or tardies.
- If you child is absent for more than 6 consecutive days, they must present a note from the physician upon return to state that they are able to return to school.
- If a child is absent more than 10% of the school year, they are considered chronically absent. Based on research, this puts the child at risk for academic and/or social emotional difficulty at school.
Below are the definitions of excused vs. unexcused absences as they are defined in the Campbell Savona Board of Education Policy:
Excused: Any absence, tardiness, or early departure for which the pupil has a valid school approved excuse. (e.g. personal illness, illness or death in the family, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics or other medical visits, approved college visits, military obligations, absences approved in advance by the Principal, and other reasons as may be approved by the Commissioner of Education, including, but not limited to, absences due to circumstances related to homelessness.) School sponsored activities are also excused absences (field trip, assembly, music lesson, etc.)
Unexcused: Any absence, tardiness or early departure for which the pupil has no valid school approved excuse. (e.g. shopping trips, family vacation, oversleeping, skipping class, hunting, babysitting, hair appointment, and any other absence that is not excused.)
