After School Program NEWSLETTER/May 2021

Big picture

DEAR STUDENTS, FAMILIES & SUPPORTERS,

This month, we are looking forward to our May 4 virtual open house and in-person summer programs at Blacklick, Harmony and Glendale!

All family members and school staff are welcome to log on for our open house. Summer programs will be held for 6 weeks, and any eligible students of the 3 districts are encouraged to enroll. Be on the lookout for enrollment packets to come home from school and be sent via Remind.

We also want to wish good luck to all students taking the PSSAs and take a moment to recognize all of the teachers and families that have worked so hard during a very challenging year to support students. Please take time to rest, relax and recharge!

Best regards,

The RSG Team

Mindfulness Moment

Talking with children about recognizing their emotions is so important! The Emotion Changing Paper Cup Octopus craft from Easy Peasy and Fun is a great tool to use as a toy when kids are playing, as a visual for story time, or as a tool for talking about emotions.

Favorite After School Program Activities:

  • Creating snow volcanos!
  • Making their own bubble soap recipes then going outside to blow and pop them.
  • Group Positive Action lessons where students talked about how to handle feelings and anger in positive ways.
  • This spring's greenhouse planting project. (Students chose from a variety of vegetable and flowers seeds, then labeled, planted and watered their greenhouses. Now they will watch them grow and monitor water and sunlight.)
  • Students explored what regions certain crops grow in as well as the different Latin names to identify them in the binomial system. (Everyone had fun trying to pronounce the long, Latin names!)

"We really benefit from RSG being in our building in normal times, but we really do see added benefit that has taken place during this time of distractions, missed schooling, and the need for additional support for our young people during the COVID pandemic. These times have been very tough on our students and our families, and we greatly appreciate the cooperation that Respective Solutions gives us. They are wonderful to work with and directly communicate with me as the building principal on many matters that help the families that take advantage of this great benefit!"

Holidays

Cinco de Mayo--May 5

Do you know the history of Cinco de Mayo? Hint: it is NOT Mexico's Independence Day!

"Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in the United States more than in Mexico. Celebrations in the state of Puebla (100 miles east of Mexico City) are common, but are fairly uncommon in the rest of the country.

Historically, El Cinco de Mayo is a U.S. holiday that originated after the Gold Rush and during the U.S. Civil War, and was celebrated in California, and to a lesser extent in Nevada and Oregon. It was created to affirm Latina/o pride and identity and it was also a way to respond to and resist many forms of oppression..."

Mother's Day--May 9

“Why do not the mothers of mankind interfere in these matters to prevent the waste of that human life of which they alone bear and know the cost?” -Julia Ward Howe

Read about the MANY origins and meanings behind Mother's Day from the National Women's History Alliance.

Memorial Day--May 31

"Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. In other words, the purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We spend time remembering those who lost their lives and could not come home, reflecting on their service and why we have the luxury and freedom that we enjoy today. We might consider how we can support and safeguard their grieving families and loved ones who are left behind."
