Ripon Cathedral School Update

Week ending Friday 6th July 2018

Music Evening Hits the Right Note

Big picture
On Tuesday night children from across the school performed for parents. From samba drums to cellos the children entertained a hall full of parents and grandparents. Year 3 (recorders) and Year 5 (ukulele) demonstrated how they had all learned to play an instrument. Thank you Mrs Elcock for organising this event and also to the Friends of the School who laid on cheese and wine for the adults and ice creams for the performers. It was a wonderful night.

recognition of long service

We were delighted to present Mrs Graham with a special certificate and some flowers on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council. This was to recognise twenty five years of continuous service for the authority, Mrs Graham said, 'I do it because I love it.' Well done Mrs Graham.

First Farewells to Year Six

On Tuesday Year 6 joined Year 6 classes from other local schools across the Diocese for a leavers' service at Ripon Cathedral. On Wednesday evening, Year 6 children and their parents were invited to school for a special presentation evening. As well as sharing memories of their time in school each child was presented with a certificate, leavers hoodie and memory stick containing videos of their time at Cathedral.

Early Years Outing to Harewood

On Wednesday fifty-two children from Nursery and Reception and some parents went on a visit to Harewood House. In the amazing weather the children had a wonderful time visiting the bird garden, farm experience and playing on the adventure playground. They also visited the house, upstairs and downstairs. A wonderful day!

Bake off - take off

When Miss Stephenson 'launched' her space project she wasn't expecting the work to 'take off' as it did, with such amazing project work from home. The children have put so much effort into their solar systems, they are out of this world! There was even a solar system cake.

Finally, a cake you can eat which still leaves space in your tummy!

Welcome Worship

On Thursday Year 2 led their 'Welcome Worship' to parents on the theme of 'winners'. After a hotly contested flappy fish race children taught that the Bible teaches us not to be proud and to win with humility.

can you sew? We need you!

Year 2 have been really busy designing Africa inspired fabrics which are being printed onto tea towels. To cut the costs of production we are asking for help from parents / grandparents / friends who have a couple of hours and a sewing machine to help us out next Wednesday to hem some material. If you can help please will you call the school office or speak to Mrs Beckett. Thank you.

World Cup Fever

Of course, there has been much excitement this week since 'that game' on Tuesday night. There is much anticipation for Saturday's game but also hope for the future, and preparing them well ahead of time, Mr Biggs was caught practising penalties with the children this week in PE.

Summer Exhibition

Due to the busy nature of the summer term it has not been possible to arrange for a single summer exhibition for the whole school. As a result, classes have organised their own exhibition of work on differing dates and times. The children would like to share with you the end products of their real projects.

Please see below for dates and venues:

Year One: Wednesday 18th July - 9am - Chapel

Year Two: Thursday 12th July - 10am-2pm - Ripon Market

Year Three: Thursday 12th July - 10am-2pm - Ripon Market

Year Four: Thursday 12th July - 2.15pm- Chapel

Year Five: Thursday 12th July - 2.30pm- Classroom

Year Six: Thursday 12th July - 9am- School Hall

All the classes have been very busy preparing for their final products. It's been exciting to have a wildlife photographer in school or to send off some amazing fabric designs, for example. Our Year 3 class have been hard at work ensuring the lettuce for their healthy sandwiches is at its best for Thursday!

Staffing Arrangements: September 2018

In case you missed last week's Update, here are the arrangements again:

Mr Dudman will be replaced by Mr Holmes as headteacher of the school.

Class teacher organisation from Reception to Year Three will remain unchanged next year. Mrs McCormick will be the non-teaching deputy, and we welcome new teachers as follows:

Year Four: Mrs McIlmurray, who joins us from Flanshawe School in Wakefield,

Year Five: Miss Heslop, coming from Herringthorpe Infant school in Rotherham,

Year Six: Mrs Moore, who has 14 years of teaching experience in the North East and overseas.

Forest School 'Must Haves'

We are delighted that we are well on the way to starting our Forest School programme, hopefully in the autumn term. Thanks to the Friends for their fundraising, and the small but hardworking group of volunteers who cleared a suitable area, we are ready to get in some expert help from Outdoor Adventures Forest School. They have a list of 'must haves' and we're wondering if anyone can help to provide some of these items:

milk crates

cable reels

pipes and guttering

logs/rounds for seating

Thanks in anticipation!

Oscar's Summer Fun Holiday Club

Book Early to Avoid Disappointment!

Now we have our summer programme in place, we are getting very excited about Oscar's holiday club, running from 23rd July to 3rd August. As requested on our survey feedback, we have built in time for the children to enjoy playing games with their friends, both inside and out and definitely involving water if the weather is still hot! In the first week, Mr Biggs will be here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and as we know how much the children love his PE lessons, we're sure it will be loads of fun.

In the second week, Amelia of Ripon Upstage Academy will be joining us with her team from Monday through to Wednesday. Her Academy are performing at the Great Yorkshire Show next week, so we are thrilled to be able to offer this outstanding opportunity exclusively to the children of our school.

An email went out on Thursday with full details of how to book Oscar's in the summer holidays. Booking online is essential, so do it now to avoid disappointment - places are limited! Use the link below with your email address as the username (click forgotten password if you are setting up your account for the first time).
