Fourth Grade
May/June
Math
We are starting our final math unit, which covers our geometry standards. Fourth graders got a taste of these skills in preparation for MCAP, but we are excited to dive deeper. Topics covered will include:
-lines, line segments, rays, points, angles
-classifying angles
-measuring and drawing angles using a protractor
-finding missing angles
-classifying quadrilaterals
-classifying triangles
-symmetry
We will also take our End of Year iReady Assessment in the final weeks of school.
Reading
We have begun our next reading module, entitled "Food for Thought". We have read an informational text about eco-friendly foods, and will also watch an informational video, read about bugs as food, and read a realistic fiction story.
We will wrap up the year by working in the "Global Guardians" module, which focuses on caring for the earth.
Students will take the End of Year iReady Assessment before the end of the school year.
Writing
The kids have worked so hard on their imaginative stories!
Our final piece that we will take all the way through the writing process is an opinion writing piece where each student will get to share about a food they love that others might not, trying to convince them of its appeal.
Depending on time, we hope to do one additional writing project this year.
We will be back to the usual word study routine following MCAP testing.
Social Studies
Our final unit is titled "American Revolution".
In this unit students will explore the compelling question, “How did the events leading to the American Revolution and the signing of the Declaration impact the lives of people?” Students will examine the events that were happening in the colonies and in Maryland starting with the French and Indian War leading to the Revolutionary War and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Primary and secondary resources will be used to learn about these events while analyzing the different perspectives of the events, how the colonists reacted to them and how they impacted people. At the end of the unit students will learn about why the Declaration of Independence was important in 1776 and why it is still important today.
