Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with These 9 Texts
With many independence holidays for Latin American countries between September 15th and October 15th, including el Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) on October 12th, it is no wonder why this month is a time for celebration. Latinos have had an incredibly important presence in North America for centuries, exemplified by cultural contributions and social movements. Both the Latino experience and Latin America’s rich history and literary tradition deserve attention in our classrooms.
To help pay tribute to amazing Latino authors, poets, and social activists, we put together a collection of 9 texts for you to use to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with your students:
CREATE A WORD WEB FOR ANY SUBJECT AREA
Word webs are an easy way to see what a student already knows about a given topic. They are a great choice for students at the beginning of a new unit. For instance, if you're about to start a new unit on fractions, students might choose to create a word web for the word: FRACTIONS. They can then add words, symbols, pictures, and examples to represent everything they already know, creating a web of their ideas. This is something they can also add to throughout the unit. As they learn new fraction concepts and skills, these can be added to show their learning and progress.
