Board Communications
President Tejada reminded everyone participating with monthly board meetings to model respect and integrity, especially for our students who often attend these meetings live or watch through the District's YouTube channel.
Vice President Lie felt this past Saturday's governance study session was very productive. Echoing the sentiments of Clerk Salahuddin, it's crucial that we encourage our students and staff to practice civic engagement through civility.
Clerk Salahuddin encourages all parents to advocate for their students and can do so through attending monthly school board meetings. She stressed the importance of practicing civility and respecting the difference of options from those in which we interact.
Trustee Ng-Garrett enjoyed attending this past Saturday's governance study session where she respected and appreciated everyone's perspectives. She stated how happy she is to be a member of the Board and serve the community.
Trustee Occhipinti was glad to hear spirit weeks are taking place on our high school campuses and the sense of normal that returns with those events. He touched on the current change of mask mandates throughout the state and how those coincide with San Mateo County.
Superintendent Report
She also mentioned that in the event of students and staff needing to attend off campus events where COVID tests are required or encouraged, rapid antigen tests, based on availability, can be provided by the District.
San Mateo County lifted their mask requirements for most indoor settings on February 16th for those who are vaccinated. She noted this does not apply to schools. Staff and students will still be required to wear masks while on campus with her keeping us updated with any changes to this requirement, should they occur.
Next week is the President's Day/February Recess vacation and all school sites will be closed with the District Office being closed on Monday, February 21st and Friday, February 25th.

Students Share Out
During the start of each board meeting, it's always a treat to hear our Student Trustees eloquently share site updates and concerns with the school Board of Trustees and Executive Cabinet.
Trustee Mustafa Abuzahriyeh from Westmoor High School was present during this meeting and shared WHS holding a "Five Acts of Love Languages" event at the school to celebrate Valentine's Week. From picking up garbage on campus, to delivering paper hearts to students, WHS Rams showed school spirit these events hosted by campus clubs and organizations.
Student Trustee Katalina Huazano, Terra Nova High School, shared that this past Monday, campus clubs sold Valentine cookies and candy grams. She noted this week being a "Battle of the Colors" spirit week ending with an all-school rally this Friday.
At the next board meeting, our District Student Trustees will have the opportunity to present on events taking place at their school sites.
Student of the Month, Shana Chen
Jefferson High is proud to present Shana Chen, a 12th grade student who has earned unreserved respect and accolades from students and staff alike, as our District’s Student of the Month for January!
Shana’s transition to high school was nothing short of remarkable. She jumped right in by participating in extracurricular activities and taking on student leadership roles, while maintaining excellent grades. Since her freshman year, she has been an active member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Mission Fusion, Key Club, ASB Leadership, and has competed on the swim team.
Shana has dedicated countless hours to serving her community as a Key Club member. Key Club is a community service organization built around the core values of leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness. She embodies all of these characteristics both in the classroom, where she earned a weighted GPA of 4.16, and also while being in leadership positions in extracurricular activities. As an ASB officer, she has concurrently held two important roles both as the secretary and treasurer which is a great deal of work. She is a kind and thoughtful peer mentor. She is very dependable and is often the first to respond in every ASB Executive Board group chat. After a busy academic year, she serves as a volunteer counselor at the Chinatown Salvation Army Day Camp.
Shana challenges herself academically; her AP Language and Composition and AP US History teachers were immediately impressed by her focus and by the level of introspection that characterized her writing. Shana's teachers all agree that she always brings her positive spirit to her classes and everything she does. In class, Shana is well- prepared; she actively participates in Socratic seminars, group activities, and projects and is not only thinking deeply but supporting her fellow classmates with positivity and care.
Shana is an exemplary scholar, but her grades cannot fully illustrate Shana’s phenomenal capacity to address complex issues and continually advocate and help others. Shana intends to study Biomedical Engineering. Wherever Shana decides to go, they will be lucky to have her.
The Jefferson High School community is stronger because of her contributions to our classrooms and campus life. On behalf of faculty and staff, we are immensely proud of Shana and forever grateful to her parents for entrusting us to be part of Shana’s journey.
