BOONE SCHOOL FAMILY NEWSLETTER
June 2019
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Families and Friends of Boone School,
It has been an exciting month with all sorts of celebrations! During the first week of May, we celebrated our Teachers and Staff with Appreciation Week. Thank you to all students and families who participated and helped make such a special week for our staff.
We also received a new Virtual Reality Learning Lab! Thanks to EX3 Labs in partnership with 1871 and FCB Chicago, Boone now has 30 virtual reality viewers for students to use the Google Expedition program across the curriculum. Students and staff are very excited to begin exploring these new tools, and we are so grateful for this generous donation which will help students access content in a whole new way.
As we move through the last few weeks of the year, I look forward to many more celebrations including our 8th grade graduation and other end of the year festivities. Wishing you a safe and happy June!
Sincerely,
Jaclyn Delaney,
Principal

VIRTUAL MUSEUM TOUR
Kindergarten Writing and Visual Arts lesson with Ms. Saeed and Mrs. Locke
The lesson involved using the Google Arts & Culture app to virtually visit a museum (I chose the Art Institute of Chicago as the museum the students would visit). The app allows a person to walk through the different wings of the museum and zoom in, scroll around and look at all of the art (it's very much like Google Street View). Students walked around the museum and chose any painting that resonated with them or felt special and wrote about the different elements they saw in it. They then used the elements to compose their own creative writing piece about the paintings.
IMAGINE what happened!! It was a rush of excitement and energy as they entered, the art room. Kindergarteners couldn’t wait to find a partner, get started and independently became the educators, working alongside the 4th graders, teaching each other, the engagement never stopped… Inspiring each other to be receptive to new ideas using their imaginations and creativity, developing fascinating tales.
Learning can take place anywhere. You can visit parks, museums and historical sites, and travel all over the world! Virtual tours are limitless.
The consensus was that the students really enjoyed collaborating together. Reinforcing the idea that using technology in the class, teachers and students can travel anywhere in the world looking first hand at anything and everything in the past or present. Finally, one student said, “We did find “ART”at the museum!!”
"I liked the field trip because you get to walk. I liked the paintings because they had a lot of people. There was a painting that I saw that had a bedroom." - Kamara
"I liked that I got to walk around the museum because I like to walk around and see paintings" - Avi
6th GRADE SCIENCE THEATRE
Pollution and Its Impact on Communities is a 3-act science play that three 6th grade classes at Chicago Public School (CPS) Daniel Boone Elementary wrote and designed under the direction of their science teacher Ms. Hannah Natividad. With creativity, ingenuity, and a playful way, the young people show their expert thinking about three major categories of pollution– land, air, and water–and the impact on the human body, other animal and plant life, and the environment. Zooming in and out of events and phenomena in different times in the past and the future, they teach science ideas, ponder environmental contamination linked to race and class, and advocate for solutions to ensure that earth can be sustainable place for all future generations.
“I wanted to talk about my experience with science theater and going to UIC. First with science theater, when I heard about it I wasn't really sure it would work for me and thought it would have been faster to just learn through a piece of paper and a test, but I was clearly wrong because I wouldn't have remembered a single thing about pollution right about now if it wasn't for us working on our movements and acting it out so many times. The experience of struggling at first was very discouraging but when it all came together in our show it felt like something very important, something WE made. It was really awesome to work with my class which I had gotten into after everybody else, so it really helped me connect to my peers, and I am really thankful to have been given the chance to work on this project. Then there was my experience at UIC, we have good equipment at Boone but going to UIC and working with professional level equipment really was something truly amazing, the people helping the backstage crew was extremely kind, helpful, and most importantly patient with us getting used to their equipment. They not only helped us get hang of the things but also have a calm mind and not to be too nervous. It was not what I expected at first but I can say it was so much better than I could have imagined, and I'm glad I got the chance to do this.”
