March is Reading Month!
Read 5 Program
On Tuesday, we will start the READ 5 program in conjunction with Reading Month 2022. Each time a student reads 5 books, house points will be awarded. The house that reads the most books that week will receive 600 points for their house, 2nd most 500 points, 3rd most 400 points, 4th most 300 points, 5th most 200 points and 6th most 100 points.
Each student who turns in a form will receive a bracelet designating that they have read 5 books.
This year a candle cut out will be put on a birthday cake with each child's name for every 5 books that they read. It will be displayed in the cafeteria for everyone to see.
If a child is an emerging reader, books that are read to them by family members may be listed on the READ 5 sheet also.
Read Across America Dress Up Days
This week will feature Read Across America with Dr. Seuss books. Students are encouraged to dress up each day. Information on theme days is below.
Additionally, each homeroom teacher will select one student per day that best represents the book theme feature for the day. The winning student from each class will receive a medal! Each student who dresses up will receive house points and will be entered in a drawing to win a copy of the book of the day!
In addition to our other literacy-themed activities, KME will host a Literacy Night on Tuesday, March 22, from 5:00-7:00 PM. Details are below.
Later in the month of March, all students will receive a copy of the same book, Her Own Two Feet, to read together as a community! The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build bigger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning – and much more. When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book augments these benefits. Reading a book together brings the added joy of building and expanding a sense of community among students, parents, teachers, and staff – and beyond. This is part of the love for reading and legacy of literacy we have at KME. It's exciting...we can't wait to get started!
Yet another way we are promoting literacy is through our Spring Book Fair which will take place March 21-25. Our Book Fair will also be open to families on Literacy Night. We know our Koalas love the Book Fair, and we do too! Thank you to our amazing families for your continued support in helping raise money for our school.
