Elkins Update- February/March 2017
Monthly Newsletter to Keep Parents Informed
There's No Place Like Elkins!
Beginning Monday, February 20th, all visitors entering the building to walk their students to class must sign in at the front office. Doors open at 7:10 am, and from that point on, all visitors must stop to sign in. We have made this change to be more in line with district procedures on other elementary schools and to increase the safety and security of our students and staff. If you normally drop off your student at the horseshoe area and wish to come inside the building, you will be asked to enter through the front office.
Movie Night is February 24th:
We hope you can join us for MOVIE NIGHT on Friday, February 24th at 6:00 pm. We will be showing the movie "The Wizard of Oz." This a family event, and we welcome the entire family to come join in the fun. Bring blankets, chairs, and some cash for our concession stand that will be run by our Elk Junior Council! Parents/guardians will be required to stay with your students. This is not a drop off event. This is for the whole family, so students will need an adult in order to attend.
Updates:
We have our family Math/Science night that will be coming up on March 6th at 6:00 pm. . Letters will be going home soon. During this night, we will have a "parent preview" of our Makerspace @ EES! Parents will be able to view this room and see what Makerspace is and what their students can expect! We are very thankful for the generosity of our Elkins PTA who funded this space for our students. The students will begin going into Makerspace in the next week to learn about the materials, and we plan to begin rotations during their specials times the week we return from spring break! We will also have a parent meeting about our LiiNK program that will take place at 5:45 on this night, before the start of Math/Science night. If you have a child in the program and/or are interested in hearing more about it, we urge you to attend!
* Speaking of spring break, don't forget that we are off from school the week of March 13-17. We hope you enjoy your break and have a fun and relaxing time with your kiddos!
* Thank you to all the dads who came out Donuts with Dads! We had a great turnout, and I know the students loved having you all come with them to enjoy a treat first thing in the morning! We love to see our family involved at Elkins, and we appreciate all of the support!
PTA Meeting/Election of Officers:
Thursday, March 9th will be the next PTA meeting and the next election of officers. There are still a few positions that are unfilled, so if you're interested, please contact our PTA president, Monica Wright at monica_lynn78@sbcglobal.net.
The PTA meeting will begin at 5:30 on 3/9, and the presentation of Aladdin will take place immediately afterwards. This is our 3-5 school play that students have been rehearsing for months! We are so incredibly excited to see their hard work pay off when they perform on this night! We hope you can all attend!
STAAR Testing around the Corner:
With spring, comes standardized testing. That means that for those few days that we are testing, we have to refrain from having visitors on campus. STAAR testing will take place on March 28th and 29th with possible testing days continuing during the week. If you are planning a trip to school to see your students, please plan on attending another week, as we must limit visitors during testing times. The next set of testing will take place the week of May 8th. This will be another time that visitors will be asked to come again at another day/time. Thanks so much for your understanding and cooperation!
Counseling Update
Our Elk Junior Council is working hard to plan our Movie night on February 24th. We hope you can come out to support Elkins by enjoying the movie and purchasing snacks and drinks at our concession stand! Our Junior Council officers also held a meeting to vote to purchase a flat screen tv for our new Makerspace! This tv will be used to showcase projects and creations the students make while their participating in Makerspace! I'm proud of these kiddos for their willingness and passion to assist all students at Elkins!
