Read for the Record
What is it? Jumpstart and Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience — bringing together over 2 million people each year in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes across the US. This annual campaign was launched over a decade ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for EVERY child, so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
Who participates? All K-5 students and staff. OH has participated in RFTR since 2009.
Orchard Hill Happenings
Dr. Carter Visits Third-Grade
Dr. Carter, our Superintendent of Schools, visited our 3rd-grade students to share her love of gardening and gave each student a daffodil bulb to plant!
Grade 5 Water Bottle Rocket Blasting with Volunteers from United Technologies
On Thursday, all fifth-grade students participated in a Water Rocket Launch event co-sponsored by Collins Aerospace and the RTX Technology Research Center. Engineers from both companies visited Orchard Hill to introduce students to the field of Aerospace engineering through a presentation and question and answer session. Students joined the engineers outside where they were able to launch bottle rockets that were engineered in STEM class.
First Graders Learn About Fire Safety
Our first-grade students were visited by the South Windsor Fire Department and learned about fire safety! They explored different parts of a fire truck, learned what to do in case of a fire in the Smoke House, saw all the different pieces of fire safety equipment the brave men and women of the fire department wear and use, and even got to spray the fire hose!!
