Why it is important
Say a tool has a ripped cord and you use it, it could possibly electrocute you. There is a danger of using a defective tool. You want to decrease the chance of injury so you want to let the teacher know immediately
There is a great chance of injury at all times in the lab, but if you are using a defective tool you are increasing the risk.
When to tell the teacher
If there is anything out of the ordinary with a tool, you should ask the teacher about it to make sure you know what it is and if it should even be there.
