What is going on?
Veteran’s Day Assembly
Sommer Elementary would like to invite our active duty, retired, or reserve service members to join us on Friday, November 8th in honoring our Nation’s Heroes at our Veterans Day Assembly. Coffee and snacks will be available for our special guests BEFORE the assembly, at 7:00 am, in the library. If possible, please fill out and submit the RSVP if you plan to attend.
RSVP HERE IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING THE ASSEMBLY
We will also be putting up our Veterans Wall again this year. Resubmit your pictures from previous years or create new ones by downloading and using the templates provided below. All Veterans pictures can be turned in to your student’s teacher NO LATER THAN November 1st, 2019. We can not guarantee that any pictures received after Nov. 1st will make the wall. PACKET FOR VETERANS WALL SUBMISSION
We invite your students to write essays or draw pictures for Veterans Day focusing on What Does It Mean to be a Veteran. Entries need to be appropriate focusing on their bravery and sacrifice (any pictures with violence would not be appropriate). You can assign it as a home assignment for students interested or do it in class, it's up to you. The due date will be next Tuesday, November 5th, by 12:00pm. Please send entries to the front office.

TAG Parent Referral Information Night for TAG Testing, Monday, November 4 5:30-6:30pm, Cafeteria
This meeting will cover information about our gifted program in RRISD and how we provide services at Sommer. We will cover the testing process, the timeline and steps parents need to take to refer their child for testing. For parents unable to attend, the presentation and timeline will be added to our TAG Team Website afterwards. It is not necessary to contact TAG teachers directly before referring a student.
Cookbook
Because of our diverse (and amazing) culture within Patsy Sommer Elementary, PTA has decided to make a collaborative cookbook! What does that mean? It means we need recipes from both you and/or your students! Recipe submissions will be taken via the internet HERE and rearranged in a easy-to-find manner before being published and sold at Passport to Sommer. What a great holiday gift this shall make?! And how exciting will it be to see you and/or your children’s name published?
In the event the link does not work, try this one: https://createmycookbook.com/projects/4etLFEnTq
Prefer to snap a photo and send it over instead? We’d love that too: sommerPTAHL@gmail.com
Looking forward to all your amazing recipes!

This and That...
Hello, parents of second graders!
We will be hosting Christina Soontornvat, a fabulous local author, for a visit with second grade classes on November 11, 2019. You can learn more about Ms Soontornvat on her website.
If you would like to add Ms Soontornvat’s books to your child’s home library, they are available for purchase at several locations. Here are some links for purchase:
Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/Christina-Soontornvat/e/B01DQ0JEG6?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_8&qid=1571870644&sr=8-8
Barnes and Noble:
Your child will receive a personalization form in their take-home folder. They may bring their books, with the form, to school on November 11th to have them signed by the author.
Thanks for supporting your child’s reading life!
Sincerely,
Ms Margocs
Sommer Librarian
