Orion Elementary School Newsletter
October/November 2023
A Note from the Principal
Dear Orion Families,
It is hard to believe that the first quarter of school is nearly behind us. It has been wonderful seeing students transition to a new school year!
We are excited about our upcoming Parent Teacher conferences. If you have not signed up online already, I encourage you to get in touch with your child’s teacher to set up a conference day and time to meet. On Monday, Oct 23 hours are (10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) Tuesday, October 24th. (9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) Students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, October 25th and 26th, hours are 9:00 - 12:30. Friday, October 27th will be an inservice day. There will be no school on Oct. 27.
Also, School Spirit Week is coming Oct. 23 – Oct. 26. I know students are excited about a week of showing school pride and spirit. When selecting an outfit for spirit week, I respectfully request that you keep the following in mind:
- Safety is important! Masks or anything that obstructs a child’s view is discouraged. Also, no items that might make your child trip and fall.
- The outfit needs to be appropriate for a school setting.
- Finally, limit the amount of face painting or hair dye. Again, these items can be hazardous in a school setting.
- Please be mindful that costumes should be appropriate if worn to school this month.
- Costumes depicting gore, blood, and weapons are prohibited.
- We go outside daily. Please be sure to layer clothing to keep your child warm in their costume
- Please ensure that your child does not bring candy, gum or other unhealthy treats to school.

Notes from Nurse Wyant
Happy October, Orion Families!
School nurse will be conducting screenings over the next two months. This includes hearing, vision, and growth (height and weight). If anything is found to be abnormal you will be notified by phone.
Reminder that students with allergies and asthma will need a care plan filled out by the provider and brought to nurse with any medications. These need to be brought in by parents and not in student's backpacks.
Any immunizations that need to be completed should be done in the month of October and updated shot records should be brought to the nurse or the front office.
Questions or concerns regarding these things please contact Olivia Wyant- Orion School nurse- 907-742-0266

SORA!
Hello from your Orion Librarian! I want to make sure that your family knows about Sora for ebooks and audiobooks (for free!).
Sora
Sora is a program used by the Anchorage School District and also by the Anchorage Public Library. Through Sora (you can download the app wherever you get your device apps) you have access to ebooks and audiobooks (great for plane rides and road trips!). I've made two instructional videos—the first is an introduction and how to log in on a chromebook/computer. The second is how to log in on the app and a couple tips and tricks. There are a lot of great options, and it's free!
