WIDA Specifics: Grades K-5

Successful Classroom Strategies and ACCESS Information

As of December 2013, Indiana adopted the WIDA English Language Development Standards and became a part of the WIDA consortium. Schools are beginning their second year of implementation and many educators have had a rudimentary overview of the plethora of resources and tools that WIDA offers. It's time to dig in and apply what we know! It is recommended that you have a good knowledge of WIDA and its components before attending this workshop. Elements of the session include:

  • Looking at sample MPIs and developing 2 or more original lessons for your class.
  • Looking at the Can-Do Descriptors and checklists and applying them to your class.
  • Differentiating at least one of your existing lessons using the WIDA Performance Definitions and other tools.
  • Looking at ACCESS scores and informing your instruction

Be sure to bring a laptop to have easy access to the many WIDA online resources. Also bring a lesson or two that you currently use in your classroom. DeAnne Taggart, the SIEC Director of Professional Learning, will be facilitating this session.
