WLWV School Board Briefs
February 26, 2019
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board hosted a public meeting on Monday, February 25. The following are select highlights from that meeting.
Board Approves and Adopts Health and Wellness Curriculum: Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education Plan
The School Board unanimously approved the district's Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education Plan on Feb. 25 following a process that spanned over the past two school years.
The State of Oregon adopted new Health and Wellness Standards in 2016, requiring school districts across the state to approve and implement Health and Wellness Plans during the 2018-19 school year. In response to those new standards, a WLWV team of counselors, teachers, and administrators began working to learn about the new State standards, explore curricular resources, and implement practices to teach toward those standards at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.
The district also engaged in five separate public input sessions, several meetings with students, and provided ample opportunities for community members to provide feedback throughout the Health and Wellness Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education Plan Process.
Staff made several changes and additions to the plan following parent and community feedback during the process, culminating in a comprehensive plan that includes 16 guidelines for all educators and schools.
Community members provided diverse feedback during the public comment period of the Feb. 25 meeting voicing a variety of opinions. The Board unanimously approved the Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education Plan.
Staff noted that the plan will now be implemented based on the 16 guidelines. Work will continue to better address alcohol and substance use, mental health, healthy social media use, and updated nutrition. The district will also prioritize professional learning to ensure that students with significant learning differences have access to sexuality education learning and information, and the district will continue to collect data through the Oregon Healthy Teens Survey, student and parent surveys, teacher classroom data, and school climate/safety surveys.
The district has also formed a Health and Wellness Task Force to advise continued improvement of the 2019 Comprehensive Human Sexuality Education Plan, while working to revise and add to the 2020-21 CSEP. That Task Force will include students, parents, teachers, counselors, specialists, administrators, community and state health, and health education advisors. The Task Force will begin meeting this spring, 2019.

Board Appoints Two New Budget Committee Members
The Budget Committee is a Board-appointed committee that works with the School Board to review and approve the budget for each school year.
Board members noted the impressive qualifications of all four applicants, thanking community members for volunteering their services. "I would like to echo what my other Board members have said regarding all of our applicants," said Board Chair Ginger Fitch. "Everyone who applied is incredibly qualified and would be terrific in the role of the budget committee. It's an example of the expertise and support we enjoy in our communities."
Board Authorizes Land Transaction for 5.21-Acre Property Adjacent Stafford Primary
The property is directly adjacent to the Stafford Primary/District Operations/Athey Creek Middle School site(s). The purchase price was favorably negotiated at $1,055,000. Once signed, and following a 75-day due diligence period, the transaction is expected to close around June 10, 2019.
The purchase of this parcel enhances the usability of the entire Stafford Primary/District Operations Center/Athey Creek Middle School site(s) for utility installations, site vehicular access and parking, future support facilities locations including warehouse space, and other long-term uses.
