Hanna Woods's Mission and Vision
Our Mission:
To ensure all students are capable, curious, caring, and confident learners who understand and respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world.
Our Vision:
We succeed when all members are leaders who demonstrate core values, problem-solve, and work to achieve our goals.
State of the District
Parkway will be embarking on Project 3.0. As a district, we will study our current reality and develop a strategic plan to move our district toward our ever-changing world. To kick off the strategic planning, Parkway will host an event to learn more about our current reality in multiple key areas. I would love to have many Hanna Woods stakeholders join me at the "State of the District" event on Wednesday, February 1st, from 5:30 - 7:30 at Parkway Central High School. The district will share updates and seek feedback on the following:
- Trends in enrollment, demographics, and staffing
- The current reality of student achievement in Parkway
- Student programs and opportunities beyond the classroom
- School climate and the social and emotional well-being of students
- Financial and facilities realities
If you are interested in joining on behalf of Hanna Woods and the South Area, please email me at mschewe@parkwayschools.net. I look forward to this journey for our current Hanna Woods Students and future generations.

Tips from Literacy Night
We had such a wonderful time learning and playing games during Literacy Night in December that we wanted to make the games available to everyone.
Phonological Awareness- is the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds.
- The guessing game: What’s in My Bag?
Phonics - use a Word Ladder and change one letter to make a new word. Phonics Packet
- Roll dice for the rime and student chooses the onset to write Roll and Write
- Color pictures that start with the sound of the letter on the page Monster pages ABC pages
Fluency - Listen to your child read and read and read it again.
Vocabulary - talk about the books, adventures and grow your child’s vocabulary
Comprehension - Visualizing what the text is saying. Have a family member read the poem while the student draws what they hear.
Keep making reading fun!

PE News
Happy, Healthy New Year!
We hope everyone enjoyed an active and healthy winter break! It’s been a great start to the year seeing our Hanna Woods Tigers return to school with a strong enthusiasm to move and learn in PE! To begin the second semester, we have continued exploring new ways of developing manipulative and cooperative skills and improving fitness.
We have reminded students about our PE expectations – respect yourself, respect others, and respect the equipment. Thank you again to the O’Bryant family and their generous donation of the new soccer goals in our front field area! Many students still seem excited about the recent World Cup and are eager to begin using the new equipment. A new recess schedule will be implemented soon to allow all grade levels an equal opportunity. We have a strong participation group of soccer players at Hanna Woods, and it’s such a great way to learn the importance of working together with teammates while getting great exercise!
In P.E. this month, we completed a four-day unit of basketball. We concentrated on improving the three main skills: dribbling, passing, and proper shooting technique. Everyone had lots of hands-on learning time with their own basketball, allowing them to progress at their own pace. We are now looking forward to upcoming hand-eye coordination practice with activities such as cup stacking and juggling.
Although we have shifted into our indoor winter activities, we will still briefly enjoy some exercise time outside on days with mild temperatures. Please continue to send your child in layers that will allow them to participate comfortably.
Thank you for your support! Please contact Mrs. Jones or Mr. Tanurchis if you have any questions regarding Hanna Woods PE/Health.Second Step Home Connection
