Deerfield Farm to School Garden
The goal of the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) Farm to School program is to expand the prevalence of fresh, local foods in school cafeterias and bolster agriculture and nutrition education.
LPS received a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation to fund and support a robust and sustainable Farm to School Program. This program directly supports the board of education’s goal to “enhance student wellness by integrating supports and services across the district.” Students will be impacted by being served meals that feature more locally produced healthy foods, advancing farm to school experiential learning through school gardening initiatives and farm field trips, and facilitating curriculum integration of health and wellness in classrooms and cafeterias. The district wide program will also impact children served by the summer feeding program. This program provides an ideal connection to farm to school, as seasonal summer produce from local farms can be integrated into these menus.
Deerfield garden beds are located west of the school. Each grade level has their own bed. Students began planting their seeds (inside) this week! Each grade has their own garden theme. Ask your child what they planted this week!

Deerfield Carnival Postponed
After a lot of planning, thought and discussion, the Deerfield PTO – along with the school administration – have decided to move the carnival from May 5, 2018 to next fall.
While we are disappointed that we will not have the end of year carnival like in years past, we will do our best to make it up to our kids. We plan to expand the gold slip game day on Friday, April 27th by adding three inflatables. We will also send a special invitation to the current 5th graders to return in the fall for the carnival. This was a difficult decision, but due to the school’s activity schedule, lack of a Carnival Committee Chair, difficulty securing volunteers, and the desire to move the carnival to the fall permanently – we decided this was the year to make the shift.
The Deerfield PTO is comprised of parents just like you who have many demands on their time. We work very hard to support our school staff and provide exciting, engaging activities for our students. However, these goals cannot be accomplished without a lot of parent involvement. Our next meeting is April 10th at 7 p.m. and we hope to see you there.
If you already donated items for the auction and you would like them back, please contact us at deerfieldpto@hotmail.com by no later than Friday, May 4th. Otherwise, we will save the donations for the silent auction in the fall.
If you have questions or comments, please email the Deerfield PTO at deerfieldpto@hotmail.com.
Thank you for your understanding.
Field Day Information
Dear Deerfield parents,
It is about that time for field day again! The fifth graders will be running the stations in the morning session and the afternoon session. Field day will be on May 11th. There is no make-up date.
The kids will be able to roam from station to station on their own during the 90 minutes they will be outside. Half the fifth graders will run the stations in the morning, while the other half will participate. The fifth graders roles will reverse during the afternoon session. The fifth graders running a station will stay at that station for the entire session. We will have 17 or more stations for the students.
Morning session 9:15 – 10:45 am
- 4H and 4W
- All 2nd graders
- All kindergartners
- All 5th graders
Afternoon session 1:00 – 2:30 pm
- All 5th graders
- 4C and 4R

If you would like to volunteer, please email me at jbott@usd497.org . I would prefer volunteers who can help all day. However, I know this is a busy time of yea and appreciate any time you can give. Let me know your time preference when you email. Volunteers will monitor and help supervise games only. Behavior issues should be referred to me. That will be my job. I want you to have fun and just be an adult presence. Let’s have a wonderful field day.
Thank you so much,
Jason Bott

Quick Announcements!
Building Secure 8:00 am-6:00 pm
Just a reminder, Deerfield entrances are locked from 8:00-6:00 pm. We ask that all parents exit the building immediately when class begins at 8:00 am. Those who have made arrangements with the teacher to visit or volunteer, need to sign-in at the office and wear a Deerfield Visitor sticker.
Although school ends at 3:05, the Boys and Girls Club is still operating. Therefore, the same procedures for entering the building during the school day are extended until 6:00 pm. Anyone wanting to enter the building will be asked to sign-in and the purpose of their visit. If you need to meet with a staff member, you must make arrangements prior to your visit. Staff are to notify the main office when they are expecting visitors. We appreciate your understanding and patience with this new procedure.
Student messages and forgotten lunches- The office continues to receive a high volume of student messages for end of the day arrangements. We would appreciate your help in making after school arrangements prior to arriving at school. We will deliver messages to students for EMERGENCIES ONLY. We cannot guarantee that non-emergency message will be delivered. We understand that occasionally a student forgets their homework or lunch. We will do our best to get these items to students, but appreciate your continued help in making sure your child comes to school Ready to Learn, by having everything they need for the day. Thank you!!
Attendance Letters- This time of year we are mailing out many attendance notification letters. We know that parents understand the importance of having their child at school everyday. We also know that there are illnesses and other circumstances that keep children out of school. However, when a child accumulates 15 or more absences, verification from the appropriate professional office may be required in order for the absences to be recorded as excused. We appreciate your understanding. Please call the school if you have any questions.
