Hope Focus: "Hobbies and Recreation"
Having fun is an important part of life. Participating in an activity that brings joy, encourages personal and creative growth, and energizes your spirit and mental health is a perfect and necessary balance to the responsibilities you are faced with every day. A hobby or recreational activity is a "get to" among a list of "have tos." Even more, something you enjoy doing could potentially lead you down a fulfilling and fun career path.
Something I enjoyed when I was growing up was playing soccer. Now, this almost didn't come to be, as I would watch my older sister's soccer games and cower at the thought of falling, as many players did. I didn't want that to happen to me! But, with some gentle coaxing, my mom convinced me to give the sport a try. And you know what? I LOVED it! I couldn't get enough of the game, so much so that it happily took up most of my days from the time I was five all the way through high school. While soccer improved my physical skill and ability, it taught me many lessons that I still use all the time in my life: how to win and lose with grace; how to persevere and take good risks; how to trust and depend on others and be trustworthy and dependable; and how to work as part of a team toward one goal. Because of soccer, some of my oldest friendships were formed with girls that I have in my life still, so many years later.
Something I enjoy now is baking and crafting. Both allow me to create things with my hands, which I love! Both hobbies give me a sense of calm, and baking makes my home smell so good! I especially love making crafts because it makes me feel connected to my grandmother. She was an amazing crafter, particularly with quilting. Like soccer, both activities have strengthened skills that help me in other areas of my life, such as patience, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
While hobbies and recreational activities are ways to have fun and enjoy life, many have the potential to turn into a career. Someone once said, "Find a job you enjoy doing, and you'll never work a day in your life." What better option is there to earn a living than doing something you enjoy every day?! Consider what you like to do and think about what careers would allow you to do that. If you love to cook, perhaps a chef or restaurateur is in your future. Someone who enjoys building with Legos might become an engineer or architect. Another who loves to read has the potential to be an author or librarian. The possibilities are endless!
During this month, reflect on the following:
- What is an activity that you love and choose to do?
- What part of it do you enjoy the most? What is the biggest challenge of this activity?
- How have you grown by doing this activity? Consider skill and character.
- What careers would allow you to earn a living doing this activity?

Take care,
Mrs. Roppo :-)

Kids at Hope Have Strong Character!
CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH
May: Honesty
When you're honest, you behave in a way that allows people to trust you. You don't steal or cheat, you follow through with what you say you're going to do, and you tell the truth (even when it's hard). It's not always easy to be honest, but, in the end, it is the right thing to do for yourself and the people around you.
