Kuru is an extremely rare and fatal nervous system (brain) disease. The disease peaked out during the 1950s and the 1960s with the Fore people in the highlands of New Guinea. The disease was transmitted among them through rituals with dead people. It is only contracted by ingesting infected brain tissue or coming into contact with sores infected with prions.
It is spread through eating prion infected meat, not cooked. Even if you do cook the meat thoroughly, the disease does not die.
You can prevent getting Kuru by making sure that the meat you are eating is not prion infected.
