#Relationship Problems

Hermia's Playlist

Theme: Relationships are hard.

Relationships are hard to maintain when you live in a city that doesn't support women's rights. Fathers have complete control over their daughter's lives. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hermia wants to marry her true love Lysander, but her father will not allow her. He is forcing her to either marry Demetrius, become a nun and never marry, or die. Hermia runs into many relationship problems throughout the story, such as well, not being allowed to marry Lysander.
Taylor Swift - Love Story

Track 1: Love Story by Taylor Swift

In the very beginning of A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare, Hermia is forbidden to marry her love Lysander. In Love Story by Taylor Swift, Juliet (Taylor Swift) is not allowed to marry Romeo (random dude) because her father won't let her. Hermia's dad won't let her marry Lysander either. Love Story resembles Hermia's feeling and situation in the beginning of the book. I chose Love Story because I thought the situation the people in the video are in is similar to Hermia's situation in the beginning of the book.

Refrain from watching the end of the video if you do not wish to see kissing, a dude in a baggy t-shirt, a proposal, or Taylor Swift in a Victorian Style dress.

Get out of this town by Carrie Underwood (lyrics)

Track 2: Get Out of This Town by Carrie Underwood

Hermia and Lysander decide to run away so that they can be together. Get Out of This Town is about running away and not telling anybody. Hermia and Lysander do run away without telling anyone until they run into Helena crying, and they tell her about their plan. I chose this song because Hermia and Lysander do get out of Athens. Running away only develops more problems in their relationship... but who knows how it would have played out if they had stayed?
Bastille - Bad Blood

Track 3: Bad Blood by Bastille

"As friendship goes, resentment grows..."

When Hermia tells Helena about her and Lysander running away, Helena goes and tells Demetrius about it. I believe that Hermia, although while acting kind, was very mad on the inside. Helena pretty much screwed up Hermia's only chance to leave Athens and their friendship. Hermia realizes that relationships are constantly messed up because when you are in love, you will do anything. She understands that Helena was doing it for love. I thought that Bad Blood was a fitting song for Hermia's situation because the lyrics talk about "bad blood" between two people.
My precious one, Celine Dion (Lyrics)

Track 4: My Precious One by Celine Dion

Hermia would listen to this song right before she and Lysander go to sleep in the woods where the faeries live. Hermia says that she's tired, so she would listen to this song as a "lullaby". The tempo of the song is slow, which suits the mood Hermia is in. The song itself sounds like a lullaby, so it would be fitting for the song to sing her to sleep. Hermia soon learns after that you should sleep with one eye open- you never know whats going to happen.
Forever and Always Taylor Swift Lyrics

Track 5: Forever and Always by Taylor Swift

Hermia wakes up to find Lysander gone. The lyrics of Forever and Always talk about how a guy once said, forever and always, but then leaves. Sounds a lot like Hermia's situation. I chose this song because it matches a lot of the stuff going on in Hermia's life right now... if she lived in a modern world. "When you said forever and always... you didn't mean it baby."

Well, your boyfriend missing is one giant relationship problem... but not much you can do about it.

The Beatles "Top So How Come (No One Loves Me)"

Track 6: So How Come (No One Loves Me) by the Beatles

"They say that everyone, loves someone. So how come, no one, loves me."

After Puck (Robin) puts the magical love potion on Lysander's and Demetrius' eyes, they both fall in love with Helena and Hermia ends up with no one loving her. She seemed really confused about why Lysander didn't love her anymore. She would sing this to Lysander probably in hope of him loving her again. Again, she runs into another relationship problem: He might not love her anymore (even without the use of magic). I chose this song because it seems like something Hermia would listen to because she can relate to it... no one loves her.
Michael Jackson - Beat It (Digitally Restored Version)

Track 7: Beat It by Michael Jackson

"They told him don't you ever come around here, don't wanna see your face, you better disappear, the fire's in their eyes and their words are really clear"

When Demetrius keeps following Hermia, she keeps telling him to go away, or beat it. She would have told Demetrius to beat it. It can't be easy to be in a relationship or maintain one if some guy you hate just keeps coming up to you and is like "I love you." This song sounds like something Hermia would sing to Demetrius, and that's why I chose it.

Taylor Swift - Better Than Revenge (Lyrics On Screen)

Track 8: Better Than Revenge by Taylor Swift

When Hermia accuses Demetrius of killing Lysander, she seemed murderous. The beginning of Better Than Revenge sounds like something Hermia would sing Demetrius, specifically the part where the song goes, "There is nothing I do better than revenge." I chose this song because the upbeat tempo is like Hermia's blood racing through her body in anger, and the lyrics sort of describe her situation.
Taylor swift - style Lyrics

Track 9: Style by Taylor Swift (Lyrics Only, No Audio)

I chose the song Style because it fits when Hermia and Lysander get back together. "And when we go crashing down, we come back everytime." Hermia's relationship with Lysander did go crashing down... and it did come back. Everytime. In the beginning, when Egeus, Hermia's father, forbids them to marry, they came back rebellious and ran away. Hermia would listen to this song when she and Lysander get back together after he is released from the love potion that Puck put on him. Relationships can be hard, but it is awesome when you fix the problems.

Enchanted - Carrie Underwood - Ever Ever After

Track 10: Ever Ever After by Carrie Underwood

"Every happy ending is a new beginning."

At the end of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hermia finally gets to marry the man she loves- Lysander. She finally gets her happy ending, and for the moment, any problems with their relationship comes to a stop. I chose this song because it's for a classic happy fairytale ending. Hermia gets a "new beginning" with Lysander. Hermia would be singing this to the whole wide world, exclaiming her newfound ability to marry the man she loves while staying where she lives.
