TIMES DAILY — Former University of North Alabama President Robert L. Potts died at 78. Potts, a Florence native and Harvard graduate, served as UNA president from 1990 to 2004. Some of his most notable achievements during his tenure at UNA include the construction of the Harrison Plaza and Fountain and the George H. Carroll Lion Habitat, the creation of the UNA Foundation, the establishment of the Child Development Center at Kilby School as well as the Raburn Wing of the College of Business and Technology. "President Potts was a student's president...he genuinely cared about the student experience at UNA and valued the input of students, faculty and staff," said Kimberly Greenway, former vice president for student affairs.

YOUNG LEARNER’S SERIES 2022/2023
The Young Learners Series is returning to the Florence Indian Mound Museum for another year of programming. The Museum is hosting a series of children’s programs where students can explore the early history of the Shoals through short lessons and hands-on learning exercises. The programs will explore 12 Native American figures through their biographies, contributions, hopes, and accomplishments. Each program will have a creative component with hands-on learning, and all events are free.
Programs will take place at the Florence Indian Mound Museum on the third Saturday of each month at 10am. Students will receive a passport of the 12 different programs, and prizes will be awarded to students who collect 8, 10, and 12 stamps throughout the year. Programs are suitable for learners ages 6-12. Some programs will require students to be outside. Registration is recommended: https://www.florencealmuseums.com/young-learners.

STATE NORMAL COLLEGE GRADUATES: 1890
As most people probably know, the University of North Alabama has had a fairly long list of names since its move to Florence from the mountain in Colbert County in 1855. The State Normal College is just one of its several names. (The term “Normal” in its name meant that it was a teacher training institution.) In the spring of 1890, the State Normal College boasted that twenty (20) graduates at its 17th commencement would soon find themselves in classrooms as fully certified teachers. (Compare the size of that small group with the number on a commencement list at UNA today.) Read through the list accompanying this week’s “Florence, Then and Now” column to see if any name(s) sounds familiar. Just a quick example: the name of Janie Moore will perhaps resonate with some since she was of the well-known Moore family in the Mars Hill community who were grandchildren of Governor Hugh McVay. Janie Moore later married Horace P. Lucas who was a successful grocer, both wholesale and retail, and an important member of the Florence City Board of Education during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. In the next generation, Chris Moore, a long-time official in the First National Bank and a community leader, was a great-grandchild of the late Governor. Others in the list of 20 graduates are probably recognizable by some, as well. The good news is that the University of North Alabama, with whatever name it might have had during its illustrious existence, has produced influential community members – whether in Florence or elsewhere.
