Salem Lutheran School News

September 2020

We hope you’ve had a smooth start to 2020-2021. We are blessed that God has given us the opportunity to come together and learn as a school family. With continued prayer, we ask God to keep us safe and health as we go through the school year.

We have a new face in the office this year. Mrs. Lahmann is our new school secretary. Stop by the school office with any questions, concerns, or just to say hello.

Parking Lot Safety – For the safety of all students, Salem’s cement parking lot should not be driven on before, during, or immediately after school. A good rule of thumb is, if the cones are up, stay in the Trinity parking lot. In the past, this has mainly been an issue at early drop off time. Please pick up and drop off your children from the Trinity lot or from the Ryan Street entrance.

Sports – Soccer and Cross Country are in full swing. We are all eager to get back outside and safely interact with others. Both teams had their first meets this week. Check out the calendar for game dates and practice times.

First Semester Missions – Costa Maya Ministries – For the first semester, our missions offering will be helping Costa Maya Ministries in Mexico. Costa Maya Ministries, previously known as Iglesia Luterana Cruz de Cristo (Cross of Crist Lutheran Church), has been spreading God’s Word for 13 years in an area devastated by Hurricane Dean. In the beginning, believers would gather on the beach, at homes, or anywhere they could come together and worship. Through continued donations and offerings of love, Costa Maya Ministries is able to build churches to share God’s word with the people of Mahahual, Mexico. Find more information on the links provided.

Kroger – Kroger gives a percentage of your purchases to Salem, but you must sign up to link your card. If you haven’t already, please sign up at to register your card & start earning for Salem Lutheran School and our Faculty Continued Education fund. Our NEW Kroger Non-Profit Organization Number (NPO) is DG733

Items we collect – Box Tops 4 Education, Coca-Cola Caps and Cardboard Codes, VG’s receipts (Family Fare or any Spartan Nash store), Tyson Project A+ labels, and School Spirit coupons from Soft & Good Bread. These items really help in funding our computer goals, athletics, and more.
**The Campbell’s soup program has been discontinued, please do not send them to school**

Congratulation Mr. Perry

Mr. Perry wins the 2020 James Madison Fellowship

This past spring, Mr. Tony Perry was one of 49 teachers awarded the 2020 James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Alexandria, VA. The James Madison Fellowship is America's most prestigious award in constitutional history and government for secondary teachers. It is directed toward current and prospective teachers of American History and Social Studies and supports the graduate study of the history and principals of the Constitution of the United States. It is only awarded to one teacher per state annually (including the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation's island and trust territories).

Mr. Perry has been working towards earning a Master's degree in American History and Governments since 2015. He has applied for the fellowship every year since starting. This fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of course study towards his degree. In addition to the financial support, Mr. Perry will also earn six credits from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. He will attend a four-week summer semester on the Constitution of the United States next summer. Mr. Perry will graduate with his Master's degree in the fall of 2021.

The James Madison Memorial Fellowship is named in honor of the fourth president of the United States. James Madison is acknowledged as the "Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights." The first fellowships were awarded in 1992, making Mr. Perry the 29th applicant from Michigan to be awarded.

Congratulations Mr. Perry! We are so blessed to have you as an instructor as well as the principal at Salem Lutheran School.
