Back to School News!

Welcome to Mrs. Sprang's Class!

Welcome Back to School!

It is hard to believe that we have already had our first full week of school, the Meet the Teacher night is over, and we are ready to dive in to our curricular work this coming week! It has been my pleasure to get to know the children over the last week and a half, and I can already tell that we have a creative, energetic, and fun-loving class. I'm excited for the great year ahead!

Celebrating our Hopes and Dreams

Our Classroom Contract

Since the start of the year, we have spent a lot of time getting to know each other. As a class, we brainstormed our three classroom rules:

We promise to

1. Take Care of Ourselves

2. Take Care of Each Other

3. Take Care of Our Environment

In small groups, we brainstormed what those rules mean to us. Some examples we came up with for taking care of ourselves included keeping our desk clean, talking at the appropriate times, and taking pride in our work. Some examples we came up with for taking care of each other were to give put ups, help someone who needs it, and to encourage one another to make good choices. To take care of our environment, some ideas we brainstormed included picking up our classroom at the end of the day, cleaning up in the cafeteria, and not leaving our things out for others to pick up.

Celebrating our Hopes and Dreams

The beginning of the year is one of my favorite times of the year because each child sets a goal to work toward during their 4th grade year. On Friday, we discussed our contract and how important it would be in order for us to achieve our hopes and dreams. Then, each child shared his or her hopes and dreams with the class. We celebrated by blowing bubbles for one another. I am looking forward to seeing this great group of students achieve their hopes and dreams!

What's Coming Up?

Coming Soon in Language Arts...

We have started to talk about things that good readers do--how we choose books, how we conduct ourselves during writers' workshop. Over the next few weeks, students will be working on finding just right books for themselves and will spend time reading and thinking about their reading. We will also be setting up our writers' notebooks to begin collecting ideas for and writing about personal narratives. Our first read aloud will be Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. I'm excited to begin these tasks!

Ask your child...

  • What is one way that a reader chooses a book?
  • When you confer with the teacher, what kind of voice should you use?

Coming Soon in Math...

On Friday, we began our unit on Geometry where students practiced drawing points, line segments, rays, and lines. We also played a game called "Mrs. Sprang Says" where the students had to use body movements to demonstrate each of the four geometric concepts we had studied. Up next, we will work on identifying different types of lines (parallel and perpendicular) as well as attributes of shapes.

Ask you child...

  • How is a line segment different from a line?
  • How do you represent a point with your hand?
