Curriculum Corner
Writing
Our first writing unit of study will cover narrative writing. We will will read our final mentor text, Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, this week. After we get back from camp, students will begin writing and publishing their own narrative story!
Reading
We have gotten started reading A Tiger Rising and have several interesting characters to study! We have been talking about and practicing the reading skill of envisionment. Good readers develop pictures in their mind of the characters and the setting in order to better comprehend what they have read.
We will continue working on Unit 1 in Reach for Reading as well. Last week, we discussed the skills of main idea & details, identifying the author's purpose, and text features of an interview. We read an interview with Josh Ponte about his study of the culture in Gabon. We will continue working on those skills this week.
You may have heard from your kids that we have accepted the Indiana Department of Education's classroom reading challenge! They have challenged classrooms to read 200 books by the end of December in honor of Indiana's Bicentennial birthday. We are already off to a great start!
I will not be collecting reading logs this week due to camp.
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: No Wordly Wise this week due to camp. We will begin Unit 3 on 9/19.
Words Their Way: We will spend Monday and Tuesday of this week practicing some of our classroom routines for Words Their Way. They will have a quiz on Wednesday. For their quiz, students will be responsible for knowing the ten words on their list, plus four "mystery words." Students will have been exposed to the mystery words during the week, but the reasoning behind this is so students can show that they didn't just memorize the ten words on their list, but understand and can apply the spelling pattern. Once we get back from camp, we will begin splitting into groups for spelling.
Math
This week in math, students will be working on learning the traditional U.S. algorithm for subtraction and converting between inches, feet, and yards. I have their Unit 1 test tentatively set for 9/23. Test dates rarely move up on the calendar, but sometimes get pushed back if we need more time to get through a lesson. Study guides will be sent home after camp.
Indiana History
We will will review map skills on Monday and will take a quiz over the application of the map skills we have learned so far on Tuesday, including:
- Using a compass rose
- Using scale
- Using a key
- Using latitude & longitude
Tennis Shoes Needed Monday!
Camp Tecumseh
Also, just a friendly reminder that all children will be riding school buses to camp. Parent chaperones have the option of driving or riding the bus. If your child is riding the bus home, pick up will be at Eagle Church at 2:00 pm. If your child is riding home with you or with another parent, please make sure I get an e-mail or note so I can make sure everyone gets home safely!
Scholastic Book Orders
I will be placing our next order on Friday, 9/30. You can either send in the paper orders or visit https://clubs.scholastic.com/ and enter class code L67HL. There is a wider selection available online and you are able to pay with a credit card if you would like to.
