Odds and Ends
February is here already!
Our regrouping for reading has been going great. We are currently in week 3!
Valentines - A class list came home today for Valentines. After lunch on February 13 we will be having ice cream sundaes. Please click here to see the sign up genius.
Valengrams - See the note in Tuesday Folders about Student Council Valengrams sale.
Parent Survey - Please complete the parent survey. A note went home in Tuesday Folders and I believe an email was sent too. Your input is incredibly valuable. Survey needs to be completed before February 26th. Print the final page of the survey and have your child bring it in for a special reward.
6 Flags Reading - Your child brought home a Six Flags reading log today. If they log 6 hours of reading by April, they will earn one ticket to Six Flags! Here is the link to the flyer - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PiV0C3u9SZjOwoBzdQ9-q5cCDoEsojsC/view?usp=sharing
Clay Project - All students have completed the clay project. Those should be back in a couple weeks. If you haven't had a chance to send in the $10 yet, please do so.
Child Safety Puppeteers-
Last week your child heard two presentations from the Child Safety Puppeteers...be sure to ask them about it.
Art -
A few weeks ago our students were asked to complete an art project for the K.A.R.E Crisis Nursery which helps support local families in need. The art work will be displayed at the Grass Valley Courtyard Suite's Gallery during the month of February. Although they can be viewed whenever the families like, the reception Union Hill will be invited to is February 16th, from 12-2 PM. Artwork will be priced modestly, likely $5.00, and proceeds will benefit K.A.R.E Crisis Nursery which helps support local families in need. There isn't pressure to purchase, and art will be returned to Union Hill students whether the works are purchased or not.
The art reception will include snacks, hot chocolate, and an art station for kids to make greeting cards for local seniors.
Families can walk around viewing artwork from several schools enjoying the many renditions and interpretations of love from Nevada County school children.
Curriculum Update
*more on top no need to stop
*more on the floor - go next door - get ten more
*number is the same - zero is the game
Please be sure to check over their homework. Some students are not crossing off to borrow. They MUST show their work in order to get full credit.
READING - This week we are reading a humorous fiction called Officer Buckle and Gloria. It is super cute. I hope you enjoy it with your kiddo tonight.
This week we are focusing on cause and effect. For example, it was cold at recess so many kids came back inside to get jackets. Cause - it was cold Effect - kids came back to get jackets.
We are also working on abbreviations. Point them out to your child when you see them.
In Tuesday Folders there will be a permission slip for your child to participate in an assembly with the K9 dog. There is no cost for this assembly, however, students must have a permission slip in order to participate.
WRITING - We are still working on our polar bear writing. We hope to have it written and typed this week!
Please continue to stress capitals and ending punctuation to students as they write!
Handwriting - Students handwriting has been getting very sloppy. Starting last week we have been working on slowing down and being neat. When a student has to redo an assignment I will be stapling a little note to it letting you know that they had to take some time at recess to fix. We have talked a lot about why it is important to write neatly. Please reinforce with your child at home when they are completing their homework.
Silent Reading - Kids are silently reading daily during class. Be sure to encourage reading at home. Listening to an audio book is just as good as reading the book. Listening to you read or an audio version the kid are hearing great fluency. When reading with kids be sure to ask a few questions along the way. ex/ Why did the character do that? Who is your favorite character?, etc.
LEXIA - In your child's planner is a label with how many units they need in Lexia a week. Please continue to encourage students to work on meeting their Lexia goal. Lexia has a default goal of 12 units per week. Students were are working below grade level will need more units per week in order to reach the end of 2nd grade goal by the end of the year.
TECH - This week in tech we will be working on our typing skills by typing our polar bear research!
PE - Our PE days have changed. Our new days are Mondays and Fridays. Please be sure make sure your child has appropriate footwear.
