Festival of the Arts
The Eagle Arts department and PTO will be hosting our Annual Festival of the Arts next Thursday, December 12th. The night includes fun for all: third grade will be entertaining with Mrs. Higdon's very own "Christmas in Carolina", students' art will be displayed in our art gallery and available for purchase, and local artisan vendors will be selling their goods and wares.
The event will be from 5:30-7:30, and we need volunteers to help with some of the details for the evening. Please select a specific spot below on how you will be able to help. This event will count as one of your two required afterschool events.

From Our Winthrop Partnership
Dear Partnership Network Teachers,
We need your help! The Winthrop University College of Education is trying to gather some information about the types of student data available to you. Our hope is to use the results of this survey to help us better prepare our teacher candidates in the use of assessment data.
We understand the stressors teachers face in relation to standardized testing and district report cards. We also understand how some of the data provided to you and your colleagues may or may not be terribly helpful in informing your practice. As a result, we want to learn more about how teachers use data in "real life," the degree to which they are supported in using data (by having time for analysis, etc.), as well as whether different sources of data are usable -- or even accessible -- to educators.
The results you provide will not contain any personally identifiable information, and will be analyzed/reported on the aggregate (combined data set). Given the confidential nature of these results, we would be most appreciative if you could share your honest thoughts and experiences with us.
This survey only takes about 15 minutes to complete and we hope to have the information by Friday, December 6. To access the survey, click here: Data Literacy Teacher Survey.
We appreciate your time and expertise. Thank you!
Lisa Harris, Winthrop University and South Pointe High School Winthrop Faculty-in-Residence (harrisl@winthrop.edu)

Safety Committee Meeting Notes
- SSO Timothy Smith was invited to the Safety Committee meeting for a Q&A and “tabletop” discussion.
- Tabletop Discussion Scenario – A car crash happens in front of the school at dismissal. It is quickly determined that one of the victims is a parent of three students. She is being taken by ambulance to the hospital. How do you respond?
- dismissal will continue as normal, consider moving dismissal to bus loop if needed
- reach out to the nearest relative to inform them of the situation and arrange pickup
- take student to the office and pull them to the side, do not worry or upset the child
- question about “smells” during drop-off – SSO will call RHPD and pass along information
- question about irate parents – SSO can help diffuse situation, can ask parent to leave, etc.
- question about intruder situations – SSO has been through active shooter training, school will be put on lockdown, concern about active shooters and our plan during arrival and dismissal
- question about “holes in security” at our school – no large concerns have been noticed, people have been better with locking classroom doors and making sure doors are closed at all times
- question about a violent student – depends on the situation and the severity of the issue, SSO Smith will judge his actions based on the events of each situation, he is able to restrain others if the situation is severe enough and others are in danger
- reminder about SSO Smith as a security presence not a disciplinarian
- The 4K and kindergarten playground is in the process of being renovated and replaced.
- The conference room door continues to be unlocked from the hallway.
- OPES had a badge swipe installed on their office door that opens into the hallway. This would be useful if anyone were to come into the office, bypass Mrs. Brown, and attempt to get into the school. This may be something that we should consider for the overall safety of the school.
- Locations for the tornado drill were better this time. This move put first grade down on B Hall.
