Skyline K-8 News
November 8, 2019
From the Principal
Happy Friday!
If you have not already done so, please use the Sign-Up Genius to sign up for conferences coming up on November 25th and November 26th. Our specialist teachers, Miss. Allie and Mrs. Dunn are also available to meet during conferences. If you would like Miss Allie, Mrs. Dunn or me to attend a conference or if you would like to meet with us, please send us an email. We look forward to seeing all of you!
Thanks to Nicole Anderson for providing treats for all of us. Our team of teachers who went to the MTSS Training two weeks ago continued presenting what we learned at the training. A huge thank you to Ms. Arias, Mrs. Melton and Mrs. Dunn for leading the meeting. We look forward to rolling out the curriculum together as a Skyline K-8 team.
If you are not following us on Twitter @BGAGUIRRE1 and @skyline_ib, you are missing out! It has been so much fun watching all of our students engaged in learning while also being safe, respectful, responsible and IB ready.
All the best,
Mrs. Aguirre

Visitors in the Building
Visitors must report to the office before entering the school building. All visitors must be logged in using the Raptor system, provide a government-issued identification and be issued a visitor badge obtained in the office when they sign in. If a staff member sees unknown persons walking around the building or on the grounds without PPS identification or a visitor's badge, he/she should inform the visitor of the requirement and escort them back to the office or call the office immediately. Never put yourself at risk. Visitors should never be left unsupervised with students. All visitors wishing to stay in a classroom for longer than a few minutes must be approved by the principal, including children brought by staff. Board policy and administrative directives state that the teacher’s responsibility is to the students in his/her classroom; classroom activities should be carried on without disruption and distraction. 3.30.050-P VISITORS IN SCHOOLS, 3.30.051-AD VISITORS IN SCHOOLS-IMPLEMENTATION

November's Learner Profile Trait is Inquiry.
Inquirers develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

Disguise a Turkey Project
Now that the pumpkins have left, the library feels a little bare! Let's take on November with a few feathered friends! Help the turkeys this Thanksgiving by giving them a great disguise. Any student who would like to save a turkey can pick up the turkey template in the library. Create a one-of-a-kind disguise so that your turkey will be safe. Please see the attached letter for more information.
MARIMBAS FOR SKYLINE STUDENTS
Skyline students need one to one instrumentation for Music Class to learn rhythm, melody, harmony and ensemble musicianship. Marimbas can be played by all students K-8. They are simple enough for a young student and complex enough for older students. Music is fun, interesting and challenging when all students have an instrument to play in the Marimba Ensemble!
Help us raise $5,000 for a full classroom set of Marimbas. Make check donation out to Skyline PTA and deliver to the front office - Thank you for your generosity to Skyline Music Students!

Levy Results
All of us at PPS are thankful that voters across Portland voted to renew the levy that pays for over 800 teachers per year, teachers in every school in the district, including here at <school name>. That’s about one-third of all PPS teachers.
Thank you for your vote of confidence and for your support of our teachers. Thank you for believing in Skyline.

Building Resilience in School-Age Children
Tuesday, November 19, 2019
6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Skyline Library
Join us in the library for this free and informative workshop on "Building Resilience in School Age Children" with Kim DeMarchi, M.Ed., certified parent educator, and certified family coach & speaker.
Resilience is the ability to overcome challenges and to be strengthened, not defeated, in the process. Resilience has been proven to mitigate the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Join Kim in learning positive parenting strategies that strengthen your connections with your children, and that will help optimize your children's resilience to be able to overcome adversity throughout life.
You can find out more about Kim and her services at: EmpoweredParenting.com.
PTA will offer FREE childcare + pizza dinner during this talk! Please RSVP for childcare by sending an email to: skylineschoolpta@gmail.com. Drop your kids off in the cafeteria a little before 6:30 p.m. and then proceed to the library. We look forward to seeing you!
Can you help our kids get excited about STEAM?
Let's Prepare
November 22, 2019 2-3 p.m.
Teachers’ Lounge
Earthquakes can strike at any time and without warning. How well are you and your family prepared for an emergency such as an earthquake? Skyline PTA’s Emergency Preparedness Committee is working with Principal Aguirre and Skyline Ridge Neighborhood Association (SRN) to help ensure our school and our community are prepared for emergencies such as a Cascadia Subduction Zone event.
Come to the meeting on November 22 to learn how you can become a part of our team. Learn more about what we have already accomplished and help us select our future priorities. Send an email to: skylineschoolpta@gmail.com, and let us know that you are interested in emergency preparedness!
Emergencies such as earthquakes may seem daunting, but preparing for them should not be. Help us to prepare, and to make awareness and preparedness a year-long norm at Skyline.
Your first homework assignment? If you live or work across a river or bridge from Skyline, you may or may not be able to get up to school in a timely manner in the event of an earthquake. Please list several school-area people on your child’s current emergency contacts' list (by “school-area” we mean friends, neighbors, parents who live or work in or around our school, and who in event of an emergency would be able to get to school before you). Please provide Debbi in the office with your updated school-area emergency contacts' list by December 1, 2019. Thank you!

Backpack Program
Hello Skyline Families –
Our wonderful school has an important program that helps fellow Skyline families that are in need of grocery help.
Usually, we get our food for the Backpack program from Sunshine Pantry in Beaverton. Sadly, they are in the midst of moving facilities and cannot help us right now.
I am asking that you, our awesome families, help us out until we can resume our regular food pick up.
I ask that you drop non-perishables at the school near the office. We are looking for pasta, sauce, fruit cups or squeezes, cereals, beans, veggies, canned meats. Anything your family would consume can be donated. Remember shelf-stable foods only.
Thank you,
Liz Ascher
Backpack Program Chair
