What is Salsa?
Salsa is a type of Latin American dance music incorporating elements of jazz and rock. It is largely based on Cuban and Puerto Rican culture. It started in the 1920s, mostly in Cuba. It expanded to New York City in the 1970s, where it became extremely popular in the U.S.
Characteristics of the Music
In most Salsa bands the instruments are a huge part of the music. The band normally will consist of bongos, bass, piano, a horn section, and a percussion section. The music is a product of genres, these genres consists of Cuban son montuno, guaracha, mambo, chachachá. With the influence of Puerto Rico bomba and plena also have an influence in salsa.
