First Grade - Career Day Series
The first grade at TBS took part in a series of exciting talks that were held in February and March. The Career Days Series is a program which was launched during the 2015-2016 school year. Parents of current first graders visit and speak to the grade about their own careers. This gives our first graders an opportunity to be exposed at an early age to a variety of career options. This year we had many parents share their jobs, ranging from a Veterinarian, to a mom who works with children in a hospital, to many parents who work for large companies, as well as those who have established their own businesses. Our first graders and their teachers were so thrilled to welcome parents to speak at this inspirational series of talks.
Autism Awareness Month
Three Bridges School joined together during April to learn about autism. Preschoolers and Kindergartners colored autism awareness ribbons, while first graders decorated puzzle pieces to show how “we all fit together”. The school’s second graders colored paper sneakers to demonstrate that “it’s okay to be different”, and third graders made hand prints to symbolize how they join hands together for autism. The students learned about famous people who have autism and the amazing achievements they have accomplished.
At a schoolwide celebration on April 4, students and staff dressed in different colors by grade level and assembled outside the building to blow bubbles. The event was aerially photographed from a bucket truck provided by the Raritan Township Fire Department in conjunction with the Three Bridges Fire Department. Why bubbles? “Autism can be compared to living inside a bubble,” explained Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant Heather Gibbons. “The idea behind blowing bubbles is to burst those bubbles and bring awareness and acceptance to the disorder. By educating others, we can help to develop an environment in our schools and community that promotes tolerance, understanding, acceptance and friendship.”
