Weekly Update May 27, 2022
Reflections
With Superintendent Barrett
As my time in Gahanna-Jefferson comes to a close, I have been thinking about what has made me most proud and given me hope for the future.
Our board of education’s commitment to our district’s values, and our vision, mission and beliefs has been courageous and affirming. Its resolution to confirm our district’s values in July of 2020 and its recent resolution to oppose House Bill 616, 322, and 327 express a deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Our school district is fundamentally committed to affirming each individual, each person, for who they are and who they aspire to be. Inspiration follows affirmation. In order to teach anyone in a transformative way, we first have to meet them where they are, find out what motivates them and energizes them, and show them they matter and have a significant role to play in our schools and in the world. In GJPS, we are committed to building a strong sense of belonging for all of our students.
In a world caught up in violence, vitriol and hate, building a strong sense of belonging in our schools matters more than it ever has, and it is likely the key factor in keeping our students engaged, curious, and safe.
My role as superintendent ends in Gahanna-Jefferson on July 31st. I will do whatever I can to help Tracey Deagle transition smoothly into her role as superintendent. She comes to our district with a great deal of excitement on the horizon, and I know she is eager to begin her tenure here.
