Upper El Weekly Newsletter
Friday, January 12, 2024
Dear Upper Elementary parents, Happy New Year! We hope you all had a peaceful holiday break.
Highlights from the week:
Congratulations to our school participants in the Hotchkiss Elks Hoop Shoot: Paxson, Robert, and Eme. Paxson took 1st place for boys 9 - 10 years old!!
Students worked really hard this week to earn the field trip to Powderhorn on Friday. We were all really excited for our first trip there this year. Hopefully we can include a couple of pictures in this newsletter. . .
The students continued working on notes and writing for their choice research project. These projects will be presented next week Friday, the 19th. Ask your child what he / she decided to study. There is quite a diversity in topics. The next research project focuses on history–biographies of important historical figures. In other ELA (English Language Arts) work, students practiced spelling, had a grammar lesson on compound sentences, and finished up work on their narrative stories.
For Math this week we reviewed fractions, decimals, and integers, and each grade level had a new lesson. 4th grade focused on geometry (angle measurement and drawing); 5th grade learned how to divide fractions without materials; 6th grade is focusing on algebra: combining like terms and exponents with variables.
Science work this week included learning about sound waves for 4th grade, water distribution on Earth and an introduction to layers of the atmosphere for 5th grade and the carbon cycle for 6th grade. In addition, 4th graders are starting a unit on Colorado history for social studies.
Upcoming events and important notices:
Please continue to make monthly payments for your child’s end of year field trip (CIMI–$125 per month for 6th graders; Denver–$30 - 40 per month for 4th and 5th graders beginning in December). If you need a scholarship for these trips, please contact Denise, our principal. We have many fundraising opportunities that parents and students can participate in to help support these scholarships.
The weather has gotten a lot colder. . . winter is here. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing to go outside during recess and snack (hat, gloves, and a jacket are a must). We also want all children to have both indoor and outdoor shoes at school for the winter. This keeps our hallways and classrooms cleaner. Please make sure your child has indoor shoes that can stay at school. Please let us know if you need assistance with this.
We will be going cross country skiing with The Nature Connection on Tuesday, January 16. There is no school on Monday, so please make sure your child comes prepared for snow and cold weather on Tuesday–layers, waterproof jacket and pants, mittens / gloves, and a hat are a must. This field trip will be during regular school hours.
We have three more downhill skiing/snowboarding lesson days at Powderhorn for the winter. We will send a registration link and information out to you each week. Our next date is Friday, January 26.

Please send a snack with your child to school. We also appreciate the donations from parents/grandparents of snacks to share with hungry children. Thank you so much for providing these for our classrooms!
Volunteers are welcome in our classrooms, at home, on committees, and on field trips. We couldn’t do all that we do without your help, so let us know if you have some extra time, talent, or treasure you are willing to donate or volunteer. ***We would still love some parent volunteers to help with spelling on Thursday mornings (8:30 - 9:30 approximately). Thank you to those that are volunteering!
We are not asking our students to do formal homework over the weekend this year. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns or want us to provide homework for your child.
Have a fabulous weekend! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Email is the easiest way to communicate with us. Check out our school website for important information, dates, and our staff bios.
