WHAT IS GEMÜTLICHKEIT?

Oktoberfest should be taking place in Munich right now, but Covid has cancelled one of the biggest celebrations of the Fall. Oktoberfest is most famous for its beerhalls and lederhosen, but it is also considered the biggest expression of Bavarian “Gemütlichkeit” of the year. What is that? Gemütlichkeit is “cordiality” or “coziness”. Gemütlichkeit has actually made it into the Oxford English Dictionary which defines it as "the quality of being pleasant cheerful; cozy, snug, homely; genial, good-natured". It is also a “feeling of belonging, peace of mind, or social acceptance.” Whichever definition you prefer, Gemütlichkeit has now joined words like “Zeitgeist” and “Shadenfreude” in the English language that are used to describe concepts that simple English terms cannot capture with one word. Whether it be a warm fire, a delicious meal, or an evening of movie watching, as colder weather approaches, let the “Gemütlichkeit” that awaits you at home keep you warm. Bis nächste Woche!
