Friday, October 2, 2020 is being designated as a remote learning day for all elementary students in the Shawnee Mission School District. Students will have contact with their teacher at the beginning of the school day, and their teacher will provide them with assignments to be completed during the remainder of the day. After that initial meeting, students will work independently the rest of the day on those assignments, while teachers continue their work to be prepared for the learning mode transition on Monday, October 5, 2020.
What will ARRIVAL look like when we return to learning at Roesland?
Student entry through Door 15 will begin at 7:50AM for those eating breakfast in the building. There will not be a place for students to wait to enter on the school property.
Those students not eating breakfast will go directly to their assigned classroom starting at 8:00AM through their assigned grade level door. Please refer to the map to find the assigned entry doors There will not be a place for students to wait to enter on the school property.
Students who arrive early will remain in the car with a parent or on the edge of school property. Parents should not use a parking space while waiting for drop off purposes. There will not be staff supervision on school property prior to 7:50 AM.
Students who arrive after 8:10AM are considered tardy and will enter through the main entrance (Door #1).
After 8:10AM, a parent will need to sign the student in using the clipboard that is located in the Roesland entryway above the lockbox. The student will enter the main office and Roesland staff will escort them to their classroom (if needed). There will be no tardy slips.
Secretaries will monitor the process when students check in late.

PreK students will enter the building at Door #3 (east side) at 12:15PM. PreK begins at 12:15PM. There will not be adult supervision or a place for PreK students to wait to enter on the school property prior to 12:15PM.
Pre-K students eating lunch will enter through Door #3 (east side) at 11:40. There will not be adult supervision or a place for PreK students to wait to enter on the school property prior to 11:40PM.
Grade K NOT eating breakfast will enter the school building through Doors: Young #5 and McGuire #6 (east side). There will not be adult supervision or a place for students to wait to enter on the school property prior to 8:00.
Grades 1, 2 and Y-Care NOT eating breakfast will enter through Door #2. There will not be adult supervision or a place for students to wait to enter on the school property prior to 8:00. They will walk directly to class.
Grades 3, 4, 5, 6 NOT eating breakfast will enter through Door #1 (main entrance).There will not be adult supervision or a place for students to wait to enter on the school property prior to 8:00. They will walk directly to class.
All breakfast kids will enter through Door #15 (west gym door).There will not be adult supervision or a place for students to wait to enter on the school property prior to 7:50 for breakfast kids. If students are eating breakfast, they will walk directly to the cafeteria.Their personal items will remain with them.
No students will congregate in the gym or hallway.
Handing in Items to Office in the Morning
Students will turn in lunch money and any other items (forms, PTA, ect) that need to go to the office to their HR teacher in the morning. If possible, please send lunch money in a sealed envelope or baggie with the student’s name and teacher written on it. There will be envelopes for the students to use if an envelope is not available.
If students forget to hand in their lunch money or paperwork to the classroom teacher, the teacher will bring it to the office at a convenient time for them throughout the day.
What will DISMISSAL look like when we return to learning at Roesland?
Picking Up Early
No parents will be able to wait in the entryway or directly outside of the building between 2:45-3:30PM. All students who are leaving early must be picked up by 2:45PM.
When an adult must pick up a student for an appointment or early for any reason, they must call prior to arriving (by 2:00 PM) and they must wait in the entryway or outside.
A staff member will contact and retrieve the student as necessary.
There will be a sign-out sheet in the entryway for the parent to sign.
The adult will need to show a photo ID through the window to the office.
The sign-out sheet will be located on top of the lock box along the south wall.
If a parent is picking up early, they must call the office by 2:00 PM so that we are able to communicate the information to the classroom teacher.

Grade level teachers will take turns monitoring dismissal doors and hallways.
Dismissal will be staggered to prevent large groups gathering on school property.
PreK will be dismissed on the blacktop by the PreK door to parents standing outside the fence line at 3:00
Walkers
Adults will stand outside the Kindergarten playground fence along Parish Drive while waiting for their student.
Parents that are picking up walkers will hold a self made sign with student(s) last name and teacher so the teacher can clearly read the name outside the fence.
Walkers will exit through Door #2 (north side) or through PK/K doors #3,5,6.
Once students arrive on the blacktop, students will stand in a line behind the designated grade level sign 6 feet apart.
Teachers will begin calling students to walk to the east gate on the blacktop where a staff member will open the gate so the student may leave with the adult.
Staff members will be strategically placed to ensure a safe departure.
No students and families may congregate on school property during dismissal. Quick movement off of school property is of utmost importance. Families who are meeting their walkers at school must stand, socially distanced, outside the fence line with their sign and mask. Staff on the PK/K playground will release your child when they see the sign.
Y-Care
Y-Care will walk directly to their designated location in the MPR where they will wash their hands upon entering.
Car Riders
Car rider students will remain in their classroom until called.
Parents will pull into the front circle drive and will remain in their car. When directed they will pull up to a designated cone/number and will wait for their child. No passing or parking in parking spots.
Parents will utilize a self made sign with student(s) name and teacher that they will hang visible in their car. A staff member will be using the walkie to call kids from classrooms.
When a student’s name is called over the walkie talkie, students will exit through Door #1 (front entrance) and walk directly to their car.

VERY Important SMSD Daily COVID-19 Student Assessment
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Prior to coming to school each day, it is important to monitor your student for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. For the health and safety of all students and staff, please conduct a Daily COVID-19 Assessment.
- It is not necessary to report the assessment has been completed unless you are reporting a YES response to attendance and/or the school nurse.
- Please call the attendance line if your child is staying home, state their symptoms, and contact your building nurse if you have any questions.

In the past 24 hours, has your student had any of the following symptoms?
- Fever (temperature of 100 or above) *

- Shortness of breath
- New loss of taste/smell
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Runny nose

- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- In the past 14 days, has your student been within 6 feet of someone for 10 minutes or greater who was diagnosed with COVID-19?
- In the past 14 days, has your student had contact with the mucous/saliva of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19?
- Is your student, a household member, or someone your student has been exposed to waiting on results from a COVID test?
- Has your student traveled to a location requiring quarantine? If the answer is YES, quarantine (stay home) for 14 days and monitor for symptoms.

FROM SMSD FOOD SERVICES - Student Meals
The food service department is pleased to announce that we will be offering FREE meals to all SMSD students regardless if they are learning remote, hybrid or in person. This includes breakfast and lunch meals. Meals that were picked up on Friday 9/4/20 will not be charged to the student’s account.
Meals are funded entirely by USDA as part of their Summer Meals Program extension. These free meals will continue as long as federal funding is available and could end prior to 12/31/20. We encourage families to continue to apply for free and reduced meals in the event the funding is no longer available by clicking here. Qualifying may allow for other support through the district so it is important to continue to apply for free and reduced meals.
- Meals will be available for pick up at all 47 SMSD schools.
- Pick up is on Fridays from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
- No advance ordering is needed. (The online digital ordering system has been disabled.)
- Available only for students enrolled in SMSD.
- May pick up meals for all of your students at your most convenient location.
- At pick up, the student(s) SMSD ID number(s) will need to be presented. Please have this ready in advance. (Student ID may be found in Skyward.)
- Pick up will be just inside the doors of school. Pease wear a mask and follow social distancing.
During remote learning each week’s pick up will include 7 breakfast and 7 lunches for each student.
Menus are available on the district web page by clicking here and are subject to change due to availability. All entrées and sides need to be taken home and refrigerated or frozen until ready to heat or consume.

When the district is able to move to the hybrid model, the students will receive their in-person meals at no cost during the two days they are in school. Meals may be picked up on Friday for the other 5 days of the week. Any extra ala carte purchases the students make while in-person learning will require money to be on their food service account.
Meals are prepared by District Food Services staff and distributed following food safety and sanitary practices.
