Parent resources to help your child succeed in Math!

Practice Computational Fluency

Computational fluency is an incredibly important skill that children need to master in their elementary years. Knowing basic facts in addition, subtraction, and multiplication (Grades K-3) and being able to quickly and accurately solve multi-digit algorithms (Grades 4-5) will serve students well as they learn more complex mathematics in middle and high school. Taking the time to ensure your child has their facts memorized now will not only boost their math grade, but help them be successful in the future.

Study Vocabulary

Precise use of mathematical vocabulary is another key to success in math! An easy way to support your child in math is to help him/her study the vocabulary words for the current chapter. Each child has a set of vocabulary cards, with the word printed on one side and definition on the other.

Help your child study his/her vocabulary throughout the chapter, and the vocabulary section of the chapter test should be a breeze!

Check with the Teacher

The Millbridge teachers want to see our students succeed. If your child is struggling with a particular skill or concept, please get in touch with your child's teacher. The teacher sees how your child performs in math every day, and can let you know what you can do to help at home. They can also provide suggestions for additional practice, including perhaps an extra practice page, or specific resources for extra practice within your child's connectEd account.

Online Resources

connectEd - This is the online resource for My Math. Your child has a username and password. The video embedded above and linked in the previous section is a short video explaining how to get the most out of this resource.

Free video lessons on many math topics from basic arithmetic to beginning algebra. Use the tabs across the top of the page to select the broad topic, and then click on a specific video.

Khan Academy

Log in with your Delran Google log in. Under Subjects, and Math by Subject, you can click on your course to find video lessons and practice problems for a variety of skills.

Internet4Classrooms - provides links to free online resources for Pre-K - 8, grouped by grade level and skill. Hover over the appropriate grade level on the left, then go to "Skill Builders," then "Mathematics."

NCTM Illuminations Virtual Manipulatives - this site is sponsored by the national Council of Teachers of Math, and it contains lots of free interactive applets that allow students K-12 to model and explore various mathematical concepts. Use the search bar on the right of the screen to check off the boxes for "Interactives" and the appropriate grade levels. You can further narrow your search by clicking on specific topics.

Private Tutoring

If you'd prefer private tutoring, you can contact the Millbridge main office or Mrs. Hutchinson (math supervisor) for a recommendation. Some of our teachers tutor privately, and we can put you in contact with someone who is currently taking on new students. The cost of private tutoring would be the responsibility of the student's family.

Mrs. Hutchinson

K-12 Supervisor of Mathematics, Business, K-5 Computers, Robotics and Co-coordinator of STEM Programming
