For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - February 2018
From the Principal's Desk...
“God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, rich in kindness”
Our God is so forgiving and shares his grace with us. At this time of the year, let us be mindful of God’ s forgiveness and try to forgive all who may differ from us. We must remember that the Lord wants us to forgive and to serve others. We are all special in God’s eyes and we are all equals.
At OLQHS, we are collecting books for a school in Houston that lost the contents of its library as a result of the flooding from Harvey. In one week, we have collected over 3400 books, our goal is 5000. We are well on our way to meeting our goal and surpassing it. We will succeed because we are serving others as God wanted us to. It is our mission to serve one another with humility and grace.
Joy in Christ,
JoAnn Wallwork

Ways to Help - During Lent!
Thank you so much to everyone for your help with our Lenten projects! We continue to be overwhelmed by your generosity!
We will be continuing these projects throughout Lent. Please consider giving to one of the projects below if you have not already.
- Book Drive: Thank you to all who have donated to our book drive for Robinson Elementary School in Houston, Texas! In the first week alone we collected over 3,000 books!! Please continue bringing books to help us reach or exceed our goal of 5,000 books. Remember - The homeroom class that collects the most books for the month—February 19th – March 16th—will win a pizza party for their class sponsored by the Student Council.
- 40 Cans for Lent: In conjunction with the OLQH Knights of Columbus, students can bring in canned goods, which will be donated to the OLQH St. Vincent DePaul food pantry and Catholic Charities. Each FRIDAY during lent will be CAN COLLECTION DAY! Students can bring cans to the front offices on each Friday during Lent for this project.
- Baby Bottle Campaign: New Life Counseling is hosting its annual Baby Bottle Campaign, which kicked off February 25th at OLQH Church. We have bottles at our Early Childhood Center. If you would like to contribute to this wonderful cause you can bring donations there.

On March 21, 2018 our school’s P.E. program is holding a Jump Rope for Heart Event (1st-6th grades) to raise funds for the American Heart Association!
This event offers many benefits:
- The money raised is to help fund potentially lifesaving research into heart disease, our nation’s number 1 killer.
- The students learn about helping others through exercise, eating healthy and jumping rope.
- The school earns gift certificates for physical education.
The Louisiana American Heart Association has recognized Our Lady Queen of Heaven School, as one of the “Top Turners” in terms of donations made from schools throughout the state. In 2016, OLQH School donated an amazing $18,000!
The students will receive a Participation Collection Envelope. On the envelope is a Release Form permitting your child to participate. You must return this form to participate in the Jump Rope Event. Depending on the amount of contributions collected, your child will be eligible for a variety of thank-you gifts that are pictured on the Collection Packet Envelope. These gifts will usually arrive at school in May.
Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s participation by making contributions.
This year, our school is registered online at the American Heart Association Web site (americanheart.org/jump), where each student can collect online- a $5 minimum donation- from family and friends. The deadline is March 19th for money and permission slip to be turned in to Coach Dietz or Mrs. LaRocca. Anytime, the students wish to turn in their envelopes between now and March 19th, will be appreciated.
If you have any questions or concerns about our Jump Rope for Heart, please call us at 477-7349.

The Art World
We have a great many new friends that are now in the Artsonia's Hall of Fame. In Second Grade we have Ali Courville, Jackson Pruitt, Adyson Swire, Amelia Lanier, Crosby Kingery, Grace Smith, Lawton Bordelon, Maizie Link, Madelyn Stewart, and Sarah Paggen. Way to go, Second Grade! The new members of the Hall of Fame in Third Grade are Bella Link, Dayne Matt, and Reece Campbell. Fourth Grade members of the Hall of Fame are Jackson Aumiller, Aidan Ritchie, Kasey Reed, Mason Stewart, and Asa Listi. Congratulations to you all!
Well, all the glitter and feathers of Mardi Gras has passed and we are now moving into Christ's Resurrection, bunnies, and Easter Eggs. Kindergarten students are hard at work creating their "Cracked Easter Egg Families" for Easter. All members of the family, including the pets, are shaped like Easter Eggs. First Graders are making their own (fake) stain glass Easter window. They are beautiful. Second Graders are going to learn to weave while making an Easter Egg Place Mat for the Easter Dinner. Third Graders (non Easter) are starting to paint their gourd bugs which will be bright and colorful.
In Fourth Grade, we will begin our Picasso study in preparation of creating their own Picasso Portraits in cray pas (oil pastels). Seventh Graders are finishing their Jay Bowdon-style abstracts. They are magnificent. Mr. Bowdon will come in next week and critique their artwork. That critique will appear in the students comment section on Artsonia. Next week they will begin their Andy Warhol-style self portraits on the Wacom Tablets in the PC Lab.
Below in the pictures you will see some of the Mardi Gras Masks created by my Second and Fourth Graders. ENJOY!
Remember, we are busy creating, making messes, and having fun!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
