Updates from the College Counselor for 01.22.2021
9-12th Save the date- Understanding College Costs on February 9– At our February Parent Outreach meeting, we will discuss how tuition, housing, textbooks, and more add up to the true cost of college attendance. This meeting is open to parents and students in any grade level. Meetings will be held virtually on Tuesday, February 9, at 12 noon and 6 pm. More details to come.
9-12th – Looking for more college planning updates and info? Just a quick reminder that we are sharing information via email, Schoology messages for students, Facebook, and our website. Our website is www.hcscollegecounselorsinfo.weebly.com. Join us on Facebook at HCS District College Counselors.
9th – 12th - Are you checking your email and Schoology messages? – Colleges and counselors are sending messages to students through email. Counselors are posting updates and reminders on the grade level Schoology pages. Many students tell us they don’t read our emails or updates, so we just want to remind you that lots of great info is available.
11 -12th Virtual College Visits – College Admissions offices want to talk with our students! Most visits will be scheduled at 12 noon as that is when the majority of our students have a break for lunch. Students can log in on their computer to talk with the recruiter or just listen in for information. Visit information is attached and will be sent out weekly. Details are also posted in Schoology updates for the students. If students are not able to attend at the visit time, contact information will be included in the list so that students can contact the Admissions Counselor directly for more info.
12th Transcripts – Now that students are back online, all transcript requests should be submitted through Naviance. Students will log in to their Naviance account (through Clever) to make the request. Attached are instructions for requesting transcripts. Let me know if you need assistance!
12th – SCHOLARSHIPS– Updated list of local scholarships is attached.
*If you are applying for local scholarships, it is likely you will need teacher recommendations, transcripts, or signed forms. Please be reminded –
- Ask early! Letters of recommendation, transcripts, and detailed forms take time, and faculty members are taking care of a lot of students. Ask for items that you need at least two weeks prior to the deadline.
- Talk to your recommenders FIRST. Do not enter a recommender’s contact information in a form unless you have talked with them first to get their agreement. This includes teachers, counselors, principals, and community members.
Scholarship Spotlight – GFWC Legacy Award Scholarships – Scholarship is open to female senior students in Huntsville/Madison County. Major consideration is given to applicants exhibiting a spirit of volunteerism and self-motivation to make a positive difference in their world. Application attached or in Naviance. Deadline 02/13.
12th - Financial Aid – The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. We encourage all our seniors to submit the FAFSA as it is the application to determine if you qualify for money for college such as Pell grant, work-study, and student loans. Learn more and get started by creating your FSA ID at www.fsaid.ed.gov. Check out the attached information to help you through the process.
* NOTE – Calhoun help sessions next week! - The deadline for scholarships at Calhoun is February 1, and submitting the FAFSA is a required part of the scholarship application. Calhoun is offering help sessions for each high school – details are posted in Schoology Updates and on Facebook.
12th grade - Have questions or need assistance with the FAFSA? Sign up for an individual virtual help session at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D4DAAAF28A2FB6-virtual1. I’m happy to help you get started or submit the FAFSA. If you have already submitted the FAFSA and need help understanding the results, I’m happy to help with that, too! If these dates/times don’t work for you, please contact me directly to find an alternate time to meet – sheri.crigger@hsv-k12.org.
