Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
Thank You Families for Engaging in Grandview!!
Dear Families,
As I left Grandview Friday evening, I had the biggest smile on my face. Fall Festival was over and it was a HUGE success! It was a true reflection of the Grandview community. 100% of the event was run by our amazing FOG and volunteers. 100% of the halls were filled with smiling families laughing and having fun with their children. 100% of the event brought families together with their children to make memories. The FOG board, both old and new board members, indicated this Fall Festival sold 30 more tickets than last year and last year they told me it was their biggest turnout. So thank you to all of you for the time and effort you took out of your hectic schedule to make the Fall Festival a success! If you see a FOG member, be sure to tell them thank you for a job well-done! It was a flawless event!
Additionally, by now you should have received a conference sign-up sheet from your child's classroom teacher for Tuesday, November 5th, for conferences. Teachers will meet with ALL of you in the fall. It is so important that attendance is upheld because the goal of conferences is to form a partnership in education between the parent and the students. If you cannot do the 6th, then reach out to the teacher for another date and time. Please take advantage of this important event. In the lobby of conferences, will be our annual on-line survey. Please be sure to stop by one of the computer kiosks to ensure that your voice is heard. With your teacher, report cards, fall NWEA, spring M-STEP, parent compact, among other materials will be shared.
Thank you for being involved with your children's education. We appreciate and value the partnership!!!
Your Proud Principal,
Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

Halloween At Grandview
1) . Kids can wear their costumes to school. We have not done this in the recent years, but we will this year. Remember no masks can be wore, no weapons can be carried, and no scary make-up can be put on. Wearing a costume is OPTIONAL!
2) . We will be having an assembly that day. It is the Wild World Adventure assembly. There will be live animals at Grandview. Preschool-2nd grade will be from 9-10:00 and 3rd-5th grade will be 10:15-11:15. Parents and siblings are welcome to come and attend this amazing assembly.
3) . In the afternoon, the Middle School Marching Band is coming over. Weather depending, we are going to have the kids walk in the parade at 1:30. Parents are welcome to attend as we walk around with the marching band to celebrate fall. We are going to ask all kids to also carry their favorite book that they have read or was read to by themselves, teacher, or even me. We are having a great year fostering a love for reading with our students, so lets celebrate this excitement.
4) . In the classroom, teachers will have a fall celebration. Some classes will be doing cider and doughnuts, other classrooms may do some fall games. In the end, it will be focused on fall fun.
I understand that some families do not celebrate Halloween. Again, that is fine and respected, but please know that we are just making this day to be a fun day for our students!!!
Conferences
Is on Tuesday, November 5th. Teachers will set their own schedule and will begin by 11:00 am and will not last longer than 8:00 pm. In the fall, teachers will meet with all parents of all of their students. If you cannot meet on Tuesday, November 5th, please be sure to reach out to the teacher to set-up another date and time. Important information will be shared, like fall NWEA data, M-STEP data, report cards, compacts and other information. Do not miss out on this opportunity. If you want to meet with the specials teachers interventionists or myself, please reach out to us. All teachers, and myself, are available to meet.
Fundraising
1) . The Grandview office is having a fundraiser. Proceeds go back to the school to help sponsor the Scholastic News subscription, fund assemblies and other classroom expenses. That information is coming home this week!!
2) 5th graders are going to start selling poinsettias as a fundraiser to start raising money for 5th grade camp.
Fundraising is optional, but so appreciated as we continue to provide opportunities for our students.

A Message from Mr. French
One of the best things about my job as a librarian is getting to read and share good books with children, as well as getting them connected to books they can read on their own. Listening to a fluent reader is one way we learn to become better readers ourselves. This is why I read to each class. Lower grade levels get to listen to both fiction and non-fiction books on various topics, while I read novels to the upper grade levels. Often there is an activity that connects the story or chapter and our curriculum that helps the listener learn something more about authors, their books and how to find them in the library. Besides practicing our listening skills we work on using good manners in the library including using a shelf marker to help keep the library in good order, showing kindness and having self control. Students in grades K and 1st check out 1 book for now, 2nd and 3rd graders are checking out 2 books and 3rd grade on up are checking out 3 books. Students are allowed to take their books home to read, but should remember to bring them back on their library day so they can check-out more. I try to put out overdue notices every few weeks to remind them to return those books. Parents, ask your child about what they are reading and consider reading to them or with them.
I also want to let everyone know that the Scholastic Bookfair will be coming to our school soon. The Bookfair will be set up in the library during the week of Nov. 4-8. Students may make purchases during school that week. This is a great opportunity to buy some books at a reasonable cost. FOG is helping me coordinate this effort. If you would like to volunteer please contact a FOG member or leave a message for me at school. All proceeds will go to the library this time. Thanks for your continued support!

The Importance of Sleep
Importance of being in school
Education is important for your child’s success in life. Regular attendance ensures that your child gets all the benefits school can offer. When children are missing school, they’re missing out on those benefits. School attendance is so important, that Michigan law makes it compulsory for all children ages 6 to 16 attending public schools. When children are excessively absent, the law holds parents/guardians accountable. If your child is truant (missing scheduled school time without an accepted excused absence), you and/or your child could end up in court with serious consequences. Attendance may be the single most important factor in school success because:
- Children do best in school when they are in class every day. The U.S. Department of Education reports that for every missed day of school, it takes a student two days to catch up.
- In addition to academics, children learn valuable lessons about personal responsibility and commitment.
- Children keep up with their peers and have stronger bonds with the school and community.
- Annually, students who graduate from high school will earn 30% more than those who don’t complete high school.
- One in 10 kindergarten students miss nearly a month of school every year. In some districts, it runs as high as 1 in 3.
- Kindergarteners who miss 10 percent of school days have lower academic performance when they reach first grade.
- Chronic absence in kindergarten translated into lower fifth grade achievement.
Below is some important information about the correlation between attendance and achievement.
Transportation Changes
School Hours
School Doors open at 8:20 and the students will report to their grade level location. At 8:25, the first bell rings and the 2nd bell rings at 8:30, when learning begins.
At dismissal, parent walk-up and pick-up will begin to be dismissed at 8:35. The final bell is at 3:40 when all students will dismiss from their afternoon dismissal location.
Your child is marked tardy starting at 8:40. Attendance and tardy was a problem at Grandview. Please do not get into the same routine this year. We need your children in school each and every day!! Also, your child will not be released after 3:15, unless plans were set beforehand.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and Lunch Menus
Late Drop off and Early Pick Up
Tardy is marked starting at 8:40.
Children will not be allowed an early dismissal from the office after 3:15 pm so we can ensure a calm and safe end to the day for all students. Please plan accordingly. If you need your child picked up between 3:15-3:40, please contact the office or classroom teacher in the morning so that we are ready for this early release.
